A 7.5-7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Culverden, New Zealand at midnight on November 14, 2016, caused by movement on multiple fault lines. The earthquake generated a tsunami. 3.  The 2016 Kaikoura earthquake occurred
two minutes after midnight on 14
November 2016 (local time). The shock
had a magnitude of 7.5 to 7.8, with the
epicentre about 15 km north-east of
Culverden on the South Island of New
Zealand. However, the earthquake was
the result of two separate but
simultaneous earthquakes, on multiple
fault lines, adding to a total of 7.5 to 7.8
magnitude. The earthquake occurred at a
depth of 15 kilometres.
