A 7.5-7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Culverden, New Zealand at midnight on November 14, 2016, caused by movement on multiple fault lines. The earthquake generated a tsunami. Two deaths were reported in Kaikoura and Mount Lyford, and there were additional casualties in Culverden and Kaikoura, though the nature of injuries was unknown. The earthquake caused significant damage along stretches of the northeast coast of the South Island.
