Nat Turner was an enslaved African American born in 1800 who led a slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831 that resulted in the deaths of 60 white slaveowners and at least 100 slaves. Turner gained followers in Southampton County and led an uprising before being imprisoned and hanged. In the aftermath, 56 additional slaves were executed and around 200 African Americans were killed by white militias in revenge attacks. Southern states passed new laws restricting rights and education for African Americans.
