The Mysteries of Misthaven

CHARACTERS
__________
— Wilda Wildbrand, founder of the Wildbrand Trading
WILDA
Co, was once known as the greatest pirate on the Cleaver
Coast. Though her notoriety has dwindled over the past
years, she has been busy establishing a port town in her
own name where she can sell her ill-gotten goods. A pirate
in the business of trade can find many uses for a port of
her own, including never concerning herself with middlemen
or law enforcement. The town seemed to pop up almost
overnight, and despite persistent questioning, she refuses
to explain how it came to be — whether by magic or other
means. Many believe her to be a witch, but those who know
her best can tell you that her of magical ability has
lack
long been a sore subject to her, especially in a world
filled with wizards, warlocks, and mages, whose scourge
upon the Southern Seas may have been a contributing factor
to her pseudo-retirement.
Calliope has lived in Misthaven since its
CALLIOPE —
founding. She is a performer with a gift for dance and
acrobatics, though it is rumored that she and Wilda
actually met during a brief tenure at sea. Many ships from
the continent of Altaira and its surrounding islands are
after all known to employ former acrobats to work the
rigging. Most shopkeepers in town live above their stores,
but Calliope earns her coin by performing in the town
square, and lives in an enchanted tent in a forest
clearing just east of town. She was once close with Wilda
and Gugrish, but over the years, has grown to deeply
resent them. Callie was the first mate aboard a ship
called the five years ago, where Wilda was the
Bullrush
quartermaster. Wilda took over the ship from its captain,
one Captain Hargrave, when he fell ill. She organised a
mutiny, establishing herself as captain before the
position could fall to Calliope. Despite Wilda’s
subsequent success, she never paid Calliope well enough to
get out from under her thumb, which only grew Calliope’s
resentment. Calliope began a smuggling operation shortly
after establishing a home in Misthaven, when it became
clear that even working in town, she would never make
enough to escape Wilda’s control.
— Gwydion is a powerful sorcerer who has lived on
GWYDION
the cliffs above Misthaven for hundreds of years, bending
the natural world around him to his will. None know his
true story aside from Wilda — that he was a murderous
terror upon the Southern Seas, and she was able to defeat
him in a duel using an enchanted weapon. When she bested
him, she carved out his heart. A wizard can live without
it, after all, but it is his only source of magic. Wilda
Created using Celtx
has always kept it on her person at all times since that
day, learning to use its inherent magic as her own, and
used it to build up the town out of nothing. Now the
heart’s magic keeps the town safe, protecting it from the
elements and attackers, and allowing her to run the land
without interference from the law, the monarchy, or other
traders seeking to infringe. Gwydion’s power is focused on
nature, so he lives among the trees in the forest glen
north of town to channel the natural world. He acts
subdued, but is simply biding his time to make his move
and regain his heart.
— Gugrish is a marsh goblin from the far eastern
GUGRISH
bogs of Altaira. He is 76 years old — goblins routinely
live to be 150, though many live to be even older — and
has been running a traveling magic shop since he was old
enough to leave home. He’s not much of a fighter, but has
always had an adventurous spirit. Goblin magic is
powerful, though not destructive; goblins have
historically been tinkerers and artisans, using their
magic to make light work of difficult tasks such as
welding metal, transporting heavy goods, and gathering raw
materials. Gugrish’s bright personality and sage advice
have made him a friend to all who meet him, including
Wilda, whom he has known since her earliest days as a
pickpocket in the High City. He isn’t a permanent resident
of the town, but often comes through to check on his old
friend. His wagon is self-propelling, pulled by magic.
— Ignatius is the town’s blacksmith, a grizzled
IGNATIUS
man in his early forties with a salt-and-pepper beard. He
wears silver half-moon glasses that seem out of place
against his scarred face, which is often squinty and set
in a frown, making him seem unapproachable. He is haunted
by a past he does not speak about — in fact, he speaks of
almost nothing, being very difficult to converse with. He
talks only to Wilda at any great length. He seems to view
her as almost a parental figure, treating her with
deference and seeking her advice. He came to Misthaven
seeking a home after leaving his former town, where he
accidentally killed his abusive older sister when she
attacked him with a branding iron from the forge. There
are still burn scars on his hands and face. Rumors have
reached the town that he’s hiding here from the law,
though the extent of their truth varies beyond that from
person to person.
— Arden is the town’s newest resident. He runs the
Arden
tavern, which he inherited just under a year ago when its
former proprietor retired to go raise sheep in the
countryside. He and Callie are running an operation to get
Created using Celtx
cheaper goods into town behind Wilda’s back, trading with
her old enemies who would like to see her operation get
undercut. The operation saves him enough gold per drink
that he’s able to save some money to move away from the
town. He and Calliope are pooling their resources to leave
together, though they have told no one in town about their
romantic relationship, or their plans.
— Matilda is the town’s seamstress and tailor. She
TILLIE
sells gear staples, such as leather belts and pouches, a
variety of hats, pirate shirts, skirts, gloves, and
bracers. Her shop is well-trafficked, but struggling due
to the high prices that Wilda sets for cloth. She’s young
and very trusting, so she doesn’t fully understand the
extent to which she is being extorted, but she listens to
Calliope and admires her, and Calliope speaks poorly of
Wilda. She knows very little of what’s going on in town,
and so spends the time that she’s not in her shop asking
visitors for information.

EXT. Main Square - Evening
__________________________
Guests gather in the Main Square of town,
surrounded on all sides by thatch-roofed,
timber-framed cottages, squat and strangely
angled, as though they've melted a little bit
and re-solidified. The square is warmly lit with
torches, which contrast the purple twilight
above. As guests mill about the main square,
sipping drinks and exploring the shops within
the surrounding cottages, an older woman makes
her way quietly through the crowd. She is finely
dressed in gathered skirts and golden jewelry,
her white hair pulled back into a silk scarf.
Though she is probably in her early seventies,
she is far from fragile -- she walks with a
decided strength, which communicates to her
guests that she is not one to be crossed. As she
reaches the center of town, she mounts the
pedestal and raises her arms for silence,
beckoning the assembled guests closer.
(Note: throughout Wilda’s entire speech,
the torches and other ambient lights
around the town flare and die out in
accordance with her mood, giving her an
air of magic that is directly connected to
the town.)
WILDA
Welcome, my intrepid travelers, unscrupulous rogues,
and all who lie between. My name is Captain Wildbrand
-- but I am feeling generous on this beautiful night.
You may call me Wilda. Congratulations on arriving at
the finest town on the Southern Shoals. I may not
have been the first pirate to establish her own port

as my ship limped to the shore, saving the lives of
everyone aboard. This place has weathered many a

[She glares pointedly at the assembled
residents, making it clear she is not only
talking about the weather. Realizing she has
become too intense, she claps her hands together
and plasters on a smile, turning back to the
audience.]

the crowd before she drinks and dismounts the

characters assembled around the main square, and
to refresh their drinks at the tavern.]

we’re looking at it. I see some of you have been.
Arden's the recent owner, though I’ve scarcely seen
him tonight. Quiet young man. Head in the clouds;
always sketching on napkins and such. Not who I’d
have chosen, but Marv liked him enough to hand him
the place when he retired, so far be it from me to

I’ve heard, but she’s a good soul. Coat room and
privies always open to the public. A real old-world
gentlewoman. Can’t say I know too many of those
anymore. Seems everyone’s got an angle. I know that’s
rich, coming from a pirate. On we go.
There’s Tillie, the clothier. Basic adventuring gear
there. I’m sure some of you are of the adventuring
type — best you stock up before leaving town. We’re
the last stop for some one hundred miles. You can’t
expect the farmers between here and Southkeep to keep
you fed and clothed.
[She catches sight of Gugrish speaking to
Gwydion, the wizard gesturing to a magical
object with annoyance. Her eyes follow him for a
moment, clearly troubled. She seems to remember
her group and collects herself sharply.]
And finally…our blacksmith. Ignatius can repair or
forge any weapons you may need. Though of course,

people a moment to notice Gugrish and allowing
him a chance to greet them, GWYDION the wizard

Gugrish smiles, showing serrated goblin

Gwydion flinches at the nickname, Gugrish eying

The marshlands are, I am sorry to report, as sunken
and damp as ever I've remembered. It‘s nice to return
home; though I do wish I could do so without the
wheels of my wagon being swallowed up.
GWYDION
Well, may you find a solid patch of ground on your
next visit.
[Gugrish’s ears twitch, a sign of his thinly
veiled annoyance with this false camaraderie.]
GUGRISH
Wholly unlikely. But at any rate, what can I help you

Captain Wildsmith. Always a pleasure to see you.
WILDA
Iggy, my dear. I’ve a delivery for you.
[She leans on the counter, glancing around the
shop surreptitiously before sliding him a
leather pouch from her belt.]
WILDA
I’ve caught wind of some troubling activity on my
rounds. I’d appreciate you keeping this safe for me
while the town is so…populated. I would hate for it
to go missing.
IGNATIUS
I’m…not sure, ma’am. Would it not be safest with you?
WILDA

quiets down. I can’t be sure how many of these folk

IGNATIUS
Very well, ma’am. Consider it done.

It’s a good day, ma’am. I slept rather well last
night, though I suppose that will be due to

etc. Actors' choice.]
WILDA
Gugrish is in town, had you seen? He’ll have stocked
some sleeping potions. And I can always cast
something on you. Ease your emotions for a time.
IGNATIUS
With respect, ma’am, a quick fix isn’t what I need.
WILDA
I understand. If you need someone to speak to…
IGNATIUS
You’re very kind. Thank you.
WILDA
Be well, my friend.
[She steps outside to rejoin her group, catching
sight of GWYDION leaving GUGRISH’s stall. It’s
impossible to avoid him altogether, so she gives
him a curt nod as he passes her in the opposite
direction. Gugrish beckons, and Wilda steps up
to the window, grimacing after Gwydion.]

You’ve always a home here as long as you return.
GUGRISH

You’ve chosen a rare clear night to visit Misthaven!
I assure you, the town is aptly named. Usually nearly
as boggy as home.
WILDA
I’m sure that a little dry air is welcome after your

GUGRISH
I’m sorry. I can’t stop him from buying everything.
WILDA

[Gugrish is speaking to interested guests about
the history of the town as Wilda leaves for her

GUGRISH
Well now, travelers! It is truly so good to see
Misthaven so well-trafficked. I recall the earliest
days of the town's founding, when it was naught but
Wilda's crew that tread this earth. Now, would you
like to hear more on the town's founding?
[He pauses for audience interaction. If no one
responds, he will plow ahead anyway.]
GUGRISH
It was only a few short years ago that Misthaven was
founded. A terrible storm brought our Captain
Wildsmith to this very cove, and she fell in love
with it as I had. Her ship was in tatters, her crew
near exhaustion, but they made it to this shore,
where nothing stood but an old, crumbling warehouse
and a swarm of marsh bugs You know of them, right?
.
[He asks around, looking increasingly
disappointed with each denial. His ears droop.]
They hover close to the ground in swarms and light
the earth with a truly magical glow. I used to rest
here on my travels just to see them. And it was on
one such night that I met Wilda.
The next time I saw her in that place, she had been
on several more adventures, and told me of the magic
she had learned. Magic makes quick work of buildings
and roads, as you might imagine. It was not even a
month later that a whole town had sprung up in the
cove, protected and provided for by Wilda. It remains
one of my favorite places to set up shop. And if you
keep your eyes open at just the right time of night,
you can still see the marsh bugs glowing in the
trees. Now...would you like to hear more about the
Captain?
[If no one responds, as can happen, he will
share the story regardless, explaining to guests
that he loves to tell it.]

GUGRISH
Ah, Captain Wildsmith. One of my dearest friends.
What did you think of her?
[He pauses for a moment for audience input.]
The night we met in this very cove, we spent many
hours talking of our travels. I had to invite her to
my caravan, as goblins are decidedly not made for
seafaring. My crazy Uncle Ugnik once tried to start a
fishing business, you know, despite knowing full well
that goblins sink like stones! Can you believe it?
Never did hear from him again. Ah, sorry...am I
getting off track?
When I met Wilda, she had only been a Captain for
some four years. Her former Captain had been cruel
and relentless, and he was hated by all. When he was
injured in battle, she knew that was her chance to
act. The crew staged a mutiny, and appointed her the
new captain of the ship--and so the became

[Arden has been speaking to guests at the bar,
asking if any of them want a little extra coin
for doing a small bit of lifting. He now leaves
the tavern through the back door to meet them in
the warehouse.]
ARDEN
Thank you for offering to help. I can’t offer much,
but each of you will get a gold piece for your
trouble. I’m afraid we’re short-handed since Lawrence
took a contract as a privateer last month. The town
seems idyllic, but…it can be hard to find new
residents. But I didn’t call you in here to complain.
Welcome to the warehouse, by the way. Come through to
the loading area with me.
[He leads guests through the warehouse, which is
stacked with crates and barrels marked with
Wilda’s brand, and into a brick-floored room
with a ramp on one side. The ramp leads directly
into the hull of a ship.]
ARDEN
This is where the Captain offloads her cargo.
Everything sold in the town comes off one of her
three ships, aside from Gugrish’s artifacts. That’s
her logo on all the barrels — the fire. She supplies
metal, rum, cloth, and sugar to the merchants here,
and takes a cut of everything we make. I suppose it's
her right, since she founded the town and all,
but…well, there’s not a lot of profit to be made,
working for a pirate.

ARDEN
You can never be too careful, and all that.

town is warded against all magic. No caster or

That is the doing of the town's founder, who fears
the free will of others. Her desire for control has
made her a tyrant.
[He speaks with big sweeping flourishes of his
staff and billowing cloak. Alongside the
dramatic lighting of the space, he seems a bit
larger-than-life.]
CALLIOPE
Are the theatrics strictly necessary?
GWYDION
...theatrics?
(genuinely confused)
CALLIOPE
Forget it. What's your point?
GWYDION
As my friend so gently suggests, there is a greater
'point' to all of this. Wilda Wildsmith is many
things, but she is not a witch. The magic she uses to
maintain this town is not her own. It was stolen--
from me.
[A brief pause for effect.]
You see, I was once known as the Mage of the
Maelstrom. I could bend the seas to my will with a
turn of my staff, shattering galleons upon the rocks
with ease as they approached the shores of my tower.
I nearly took down the entire pirate operation in the
Southern Seas by conjuring great storms to lead them
astray. It was glorious! And then...
[He looks distant, quieting himself suddenly as
his voice rises too loud.]
Created using Celtx
I became careless. I summoned my great sea beast,
Cetus, to take down a pirate who continually passed
too close to my shores. She always managed to elude
my storms, so I knew I needed to make a more dramatic
move. I imbued the creature with my magic, and sent
it to kill her. And she...bested it. I underestimated
her, and for that, I paid most dearly. That wretched
woman bested my creature, and in doing so…she stole
my Heart.
[Gwydion doesn't realize that this is funny, or
that no one knows what he's talking about. He
hangs his head in grief as Callie looks around
the room, meeting confused eyes.]
CALLIOPE
He doesn't hear it. Explain that

[Still tremendously serious, Gwydion looks up.
His eyes are intense and a bit wild, his tone
deathly low.]
GWYDION
A wizard's Heart is not the same as the organ in your
chest. It is his source of magic, the very essence
which allows him to cast. Without it, he is without
power entirely, which is why it must be so carefully
protected. Most keep it close. Once a wizard's power
manifests, so too does his Heart, and the opportunity
to forge it into whatever he wishes. Some keep their
Hearts as glowing flames atop their highest keeps,
others as gemstones in their staffs. They are
eternally malleable, ever changing, so that a wizard
may carry their magic with them wherever they may go,
and keep it well hidden. I imbued my sea creature
with the power of my Heart so that I might control it
from my keep -- and that is where I met my downfall.
Captain Wildsmith slayed my creature and took my
power for herself. And alas, she has not made the
same mistake that I did. She has never been parted
from this stolen power. Until now.
CALLIOPE
Wilda always keeps the heart on her belt in a canvas
satchel. Tonight, Gwydion tells me he saw her
entering the blacksmith’s shop and leaving without
it. Seems she’s nervous about it being stolen, and is
having her friend look after it. This is good news
for us.
Created using Celtx
GWYDION
I cannot be seen anywhere near Ignatius’s shop, or
else he’ll never leave it. I need you all to form a
distraction and steal back the heart so that Wilda
can no longer hold this town in an iron grip. And if
a sense of morality is not enough to sway you…perhaps
you will be tempted by a reward of gold.
CALLIOPE
I don’t want any of you to feel badly about this.
Wilda has spent her life taking all she can from
others and only caring for herself. She controls
everything in this town, as both merchant and
monarch. This plan will merely help those of us she
has abused and forgotten to regain the upper hand.
We’ve stood idly by for far too long, hoping she
would change. It’s apparent now that she’s never
going to.
GWYDION
You’ve a way with words, Calliope.
CALLIOPE
Shush. I believe I have a plan that will work, but it
requires all of you. We will need two groups to
infiltrate the storeroom behind the blacksmith’s shop
— one to distract Ignatius, and another to sneak in
and steal the heart. Fortunately, the blacksmith’s
storeroom is connected to the tailor’s storeroom, so
we can sneak a group in through the tailor’s shop.
Tillie is a friend of mine, so she should let us in.
But before we do anything…two groups, please. If
you’re interested in infiltration and are up for a
bit of lifting, with me. If not, with Gwydion.
[The guests split into groups.]
CALLIOPE
Excellent. I was hoping I’d
(Aside, to her group.)
get you lot. We’re going to need to approach Tillie
with a delivery, so follow me when we leave here.
There are some empty crates beside the tavern that
you can carry into the shop. When you get there, tell
her that you have a delivery, and she should let you
into the access corridor. From there, leave the empty
crates in the hall and enter the blacksmith’s shop
from the other door. The heart should be there,
though you may have to dig for it. Wilda keeps it in
a brown satchel with golden strings. And of course,
we’ll need to keep our stories straight. If she asks,
what should we be delivering? Any ideas?
Created using Celtx
[Calliope pauses for guest input. If they
suggest something other than a fabric, she will
ask for a type of cloth instead, and maybe ask
the guest if they’re familiar with what a tailor
does. If they suggest a man-made fibre that
would not exist in the fantasy world, she will
be confused by it, but use it nonetheless.]
CALLIOPE
Wonderful. So we’re all clear, in these crates is a
delivery of imported [fabric] from the Cleaver Coast.
All the crates around here have Wildbrand’s stamp on
them, so she shouldn’t question that the delivery is
from Wilda’s ships. I’ll show you where the crates
are, and we can get going.
GWYDION
So you’re the competent ones,
(Aside, to his group.)
I assume? Good. You have the much more difficult
task, if I am to be honest with you…but you seem more
than up to the challenge. I cannot go with you, but
Calliope will be nearby. Your job is to distract the
blacksmith as your friends over there retrieve the
heart. I can tell you that Ignatius is an
intimidating man, but an approachable one. He will
speak to you for a long time about his work If you
get him started. It’s best not to ask him anything
— he will refuse to speak about his family
personal
or his past. Rumor has it that he is hiding out here
from the law after committing a murder in his
homeland. If you broach the subject, he will surely
end the conversation and return inside. You must not
allow him to do that until Calliope gives you the
high sign. Is that perfectly understood?
He awaits audience confirmation.
Grand. I shall remain here and eagerly await your
successful return.
He raises a single finger, leaning in close to
the group.
You would be wise not to betray me at any point
during this operation. I would hate for any of you to
end up on the wrong side of history.
Calliope takes the groups around the front of
the inn. Here, she shows one group where to get
crates and walks with them into the tailor’s
shop.

Have you heard the legend of Cetus? It was the great

Hideous thing, all long and scaled and covered in

[She shudders, remembering.]
Mysterious storms would sweep in from the ocean
without warning, churning up water spouts and
maelstroms, and the sea monster with them. Most
vessels stayed clear of this shore, fearing it was
cursed. It took a pirate with a small fleet to get
anywhere close. You see, the lighthouse sailors could

WILDA
Have any of you tried the rum at the tavern yet?
Good, isn’t it? I have my own distillery on a small
island north of here. I had to do something with all
that sugar I was running through the islands, and my
crews were drinking so much rum on shore leave that I
thought I might as well start making something off of
it. It can be nice to have an honest business to fall
back on. Well…honest enough. The crown never comes
snooping around these parts, so it’s not as though I
have to declare what I’m earning. Or that it even
exists at all. Plenty of pirate-run ports around here
to sell to tax-free. It’s a positive for everybody
involved. And I do rather like being in charge of a
small conglomerate. It’s just the bookkeeping that
drives me mad.

Right, then. Some of you may have seen this already,

Wilda has no shortage of enemies in the waters

competitors' rum. And when they come collecting for
the profit, they take much less of it.
CALLIOPE
Amazing what you can convince pirates to do when they
hold a grudge.
ARDEN
We'd been using the tunnels connected to the
warehouse to reach the far side of the cliffs, where
enemy ships could dock unseen. But there have been
rumblings from the mountains, causing cave-ins.
CALLIOPE
Some idiot adventurers woke a dragon, I'd wager.
ARDEN
So the path to the hidden dock has been sealed shut.
That means we're going to have to find a new way to
import cheaper goods -- without Wilda suspecting
anything.

What are you doing skulking around in here?
TILLIE
I was just looking for a delivery...it was supposed

CALLIOPE
Like the delivery you received not an hour ago?
TILLIE

[She looks like she might cry, glancing around
at the audience desperately for help. Her voice
softens as she turns back to Calliope, hardly
able to meet her eyes.]
TILLIE

It seems I may be developing the wrong sort of

My dreams are small enough to exist here.

However did he get it from Wilda?

She--
CALLIOPE
It doesn't matter.
[She sweeps up Tillie's hands in hers, looking
to the audience.]
CALLIOPE
In fact, you're all welcome aboard our crew. If we

ARDEN
Sure, but you've got a show to do, yeah? Maybe save
the secret council for afterwards.
CALLIOPE
Right you are.

will arrive at her office to discuss it.
Ignatius enters looking harried, followed by the
guests who went to retrieve him.]
IGNATIUS
Captain Wildsmith, I assure you, I will find who did
this. I would lay down my life to ensure that I make
this mistake right--
WILDA
Enough, Iggy. It's alright.
IGNATIUS
Captain, you are at risk while the wizard

He'll not make a move until I appear in the town

IGNATIUS
Ma'am, I really must insist you allow me to retrieve
the Heart before that can happen.
WILDA
On this, we are agreed.
[She turns to the guests.]
WILDA
Where did you say the Heart was being kept?
[She awaits their answer. If they do not

WILDA
Of course he would keep it in the forest. Behind the
Inn, I should think, where he can retrieve it with
ease. Take these exemplary folks with you, Iggy, and
retrieve the heart for me. I recommend you take the
back path, to avoid arousing suspicion.
IGNATIUS
We shall see it done, Captain.
[He gives a stiff little bow and quickly leaves,
followed by the guests.
After retrieving the heart from the tree hollow,
the group returns it to Wilda, who clips the bag

WILDA
Excellent work, all of you. Let's not do this again,

Well, well. I suppose I've solved my rum-stocking

lanterns around the square begin to glow green

surprise. He blocks the swing with his staff and
she kicks his leg, sending him off balance. The
two grapple for a time. Though Gwydion has magic
on his side, firing off bolts that set off
'explosions' of light and sound in the
surrounding buildings, Wilda is clearly the more
seasoned fighter. She is a whirlwind, striking
with her sword, hands, and feet. At last, she
slices at Gwydion's knee, bringing him to the
ground, and swings down at his head. He raises
his staff to block the blow, and Wilda's sword
cleaves it in half.
Gwydion watches as the staff breaks, Wilda
planting her boot firmly on it to keep Gwydion
from retrieving the faintly pulsing heart. He

WILDA
You truly think that this sword, forged from the body
of your great sea beast, would not contain its own
magic? That is always the problem in this town.
People consistently underestimate me.
GWYDION
Will you kill me?
WILDA
That remains to be decided.

panting and waving a handful of documents.]

bookkeeping pages from a ledger.]
TILLIE
I found these in a secret room behind the warehouse,

return the moment she realizes Gwydion is still
without his power.
GUGRISH
And you will negotiate with her?
[Calliope sheaths her sword, looking across the
assembled crowd. She weighs the glowing staff in
her hand.]
CALLIOPE
These people deserve a fair leader. That person could
be Wilda...if I can convince her to compromise.
GUGRISH
I am certain if anyone can, it's you. You've a
powerful bargaining chip at your disposal with the
wizard gone.
CALLIOPE
Thank you, Gugrish. Everyone here owes you a great
debt.
[Gugrish bows his head, and the wagon window
closes.]

SCENE 18-A
__________
Ending 4 - EXT - Main Square - Night
____________________________________
This version of the ending is performed IF two
conditions are previously met:
1. Neither Tillie nor the guests betray
Calliope.
2. Gwydion ends the play with the heart.
Wilda enters the main square, flanked by
Ignatius. As they enter, Gwydion walks to the
center of the square, mounting the stage.
Calliope falters and quickly leaves the stage,
her performance interrupted.
WILDA
My friend tells me that you may have something that
belongs to me.
GWYDION
Then he would be mistaken! I have only what is
rightfully mine.
He removes the heart from his belt, slipping it
from the bag and into his hands. It glows with a
mysterious blue-green light that seeps between
the cracks in a black exterior.
WILDA
Those who abuse power do not deserve to wield it.
GWYDION
Ever the hypocrite. You make a misery of your
townsfolk's lives, yet you call yourself their hero.
Have you ever stopped to ask yourself whether they
want your protection? Or do you just assume in your
arrogance that they will be grateful?
Wilda looks around at the audience.
WILDA
I welcome you into my haven, providing you with food,
drink, shelter and supplies, and you repay me thus?
This man has killed countless innocents upon these
shores in the name of protecting his power. You would
aid such a man?
Created using Celtx
GWYDION
You have created a realm where currency is king. It
should be no great wonder that those within your
walls are willing to betray you for it.
WILDA
Enough. If you wish to kill me, be done with it, so I
will not have to hear your gloating any longer.
GWYDION
Very well. I will not deny you a final request.
He takes the glowing Heart and attaches it to
the end of his staff. The entire staff begins to
glow blue-green, casting an eerie light. The
lanterns around the square begin to glow green
as he sweeps in a circle, staff extended. The
lights flicker low, almost going out, before
roaring back to life. He smiles.
GWYDION
A clever spell, to be certain. To ward this place
against magic was one of your better tricks.
WILDA
Cheers.
(Flatly)
GWYDION
You have been a great hinderance to me these long
years. I admit I will take great joy in killing you.
WILDA
Shall we get on with it, then?
Gwydion motions to the stage before him. With a
hand from Ignatius, who looks positively
defeated, she mounts the stage and draws her
sword, assuming a fighting stance.
GWYDION
I had hoped you might make this easier for
(Sighing)
yourself.
WILDA
I assure you, it will be easy enough.
Gwydion raises his staff and strikes suddenly.
Wilda ducks, quick as a snake, and a lantern
behind her goes out with a loud bang and a flash
of light as the shot misses her head. She raises
her sword and rushes Gwydion, catching him by
Created using Celtx
surprise. He blocks the swing with his staff and
she kicks his leg, sending him off balance. The
two grapple for a time. Though Gwydion has magic
on his side, firing off bolts that set off
'explosions' of light and sound in the
surrounding buildings, Wilda is clearly the more
seasoned fighter. She is a whirlwind, striking
with her sword, hands, and feet. At last, she
slices at Gwydion's knee, bringing him to the
ground, and swings down at his head. He raises
his staff to block the blow, and Wilda's sword
cleaves it in half.
Gwydion watches as the staff breaks, Wilda
planting her boot firmly on it to keep Gwydion
from retrieving the faintly pulsing heart. He
looks up at her, distraught.
GWYDION
did you slice through an item of such power?
How
WILDA
You truly think that this sword, forged from the body
of your great sea beast, would not contain its own
magic? That is always the problem in this town.
People consistently underestimate me.
GWYDION
Will you kill me?
WILDA
That remains to be decided. Lock him in the brig. I
will decide later if I am feeling merciful.
Two townsfolk approach and grab Gwydion by the
arms, dragging him away through the crowd.

CLOSING
_______
EXT - Main Square - Night
_________________________
Delivered by either Calliope or Wilda, depending
on the results of the confrontation.
SPEAKER
Well! I daresay that's a far more exciting evening
than any of us had planned! Sorry for the
mess... But
(they wipe their sword on their clothing).
that's life in business. Sometimes these matters
cannot wait. I hope these events didn't sully your
experience here in Misthaven. Though from what I see,
your contributions tonight were invaluable in
bringing about the end of a dangerous scoundrel.
You've all made the town safer, and we thank you.
IF Wilda:
WILDA
I have some housekeeping to do here in town, so it
seems my journey to the Southern Straits must be
delayed by a matter of days. When I make sail,
do
those of you who have proven yourselves loyal are
more than welcome aboard. You have a spot on my crew
as long as I am captain. As for the rest of you, I
would make myself scarce. I don't take kindly to
mutineers in my town. (She sweeps her gaze around.)
Well? Don't you all have jobs? Don't just stand
around on my account. You act like you've never seen
a proper duel before! And of
(She claps loudly.)
course, thank you for visiting Misthaven.
IF Calliope:
CALLIOPE
I can't say this evening went as I had planned. I
suppose we have some logistics to sort out now.
GWYDION
Spare me your politics. I have what I came for.
CALLIOPE
And what becomes of this town, now you've regained
your power?
GWYDION
I have no qualms with your people...for now. Remain
within your bounds and it shall stay that way. You
shall be no threat, bereft of your magical defenses.
Created using Celtx
CALLIOPE
I suppose I have to take you at your word.
GWYDION
I suppose you do.
[Calliope waves him away, turning back to the
assembled guests.]
CALLIOPE
I know this is not the outcome any of us expected.
But the town is safer now, and in no small part that
is thanks to all of you. Thank you for visiting
Misthaven.

  • 1. The Mysteries of Misthaven by Kat Mullet
  • 2. Created using Celtx CHARACTERS __________ — Wilda Wildbrand, founder of the Wildbrand Trading WILDA Co, was once known as the greatest pirate on the Cleaver Coast. Though her notoriety has dwindled over the past years, she has been busy establishing a port town in her own name where she can sell her ill-gotten goods. A pirate in the business of trade can find many uses for a port of her own, including never concerning herself with middlemen or law enforcement. The town seemed to pop up almost overnight, and despite persistent questioning, she refuses to explain how it came to be — whether by magic or other means. Many believe her to be a witch, but those who know her best can tell you that her of magical ability has lack long been a sore subject to her, especially in a world filled with wizards, warlocks, and mages, whose scourge upon the Southern Seas may have been a contributing factor to her pseudo-retirement. Calliope has lived in Misthaven since its CALLIOPE — founding. She is a performer with a gift for dance and acrobatics, though it is rumored that she and Wilda actually met during a brief tenure at sea. Many ships from the continent of Altaira and its surrounding islands are after all known to employ former acrobats to work the rigging. Most shopkeepers in town live above their stores, but Calliope earns her coin by performing in the town square, and lives in an enchanted tent in a forest clearing just east of town. She was once close with Wilda and Gugrish, but over the years, has grown to deeply resent them. Callie was the first mate aboard a ship called the five years ago, where Wilda was the Bullrush quartermaster. Wilda took over the ship from its captain, one Captain Hargrave, when he fell ill. She organised a mutiny, establishing herself as captain before the position could fall to Calliope. Despite Wilda’s subsequent success, she never paid Calliope well enough to get out from under her thumb, which only grew Calliope’s resentment. Calliope began a smuggling operation shortly after establishing a home in Misthaven, when it became clear that even working in town, she would never make enough to escape Wilda’s control. — Gwydion is a powerful sorcerer who has lived on GWYDION the cliffs above Misthaven for hundreds of years, bending the natural world around him to his will. None know his true story aside from Wilda — that he was a murderous terror upon the Southern Seas, and she was able to defeat him in a duel using an enchanted weapon. When she bested him, she carved out his heart. A wizard can live without it, after all, but it is his only source of magic. Wilda
  • 3. Created using Celtx has always kept it on her person at all times since that day, learning to use its inherent magic as her own, and used it to build up the town out of nothing. Now the heart’s magic keeps the town safe, protecting it from the elements and attackers, and allowing her to run the land without interference from the law, the monarchy, or other traders seeking to infringe. Gwydion’s power is focused on nature, so he lives among the trees in the forest glen north of town to channel the natural world. He acts subdued, but is simply biding his time to make his move and regain his heart. — Gugrish is a marsh goblin from the far eastern GUGRISH bogs of Altaira. He is 76 years old — goblins routinely live to be 150, though many live to be even older — and has been running a traveling magic shop since he was old enough to leave home. He’s not much of a fighter, but has always had an adventurous spirit. Goblin magic is powerful, though not destructive; goblins have historically been tinkerers and artisans, using their magic to make light work of difficult tasks such as welding metal, transporting heavy goods, and gathering raw materials. Gugrish’s bright personality and sage advice have made him a friend to all who meet him, including Wilda, whom he has known since her earliest days as a pickpocket in the High City. He isn’t a permanent resident of the town, but often comes through to check on his old friend. His wagon is self-propelling, pulled by magic. — Ignatius is the town’s blacksmith, a grizzled IGNATIUS man in his early forties with a salt-and-pepper beard. He wears silver half-moon glasses that seem out of place against his scarred face, which is often squinty and set in a frown, making him seem unapproachable. He is haunted by a past he does not speak about — in fact, he speaks of almost nothing, being very difficult to converse with. He talks only to Wilda at any great length. He seems to view her as almost a parental figure, treating her with deference and seeking her advice. He came to Misthaven seeking a home after leaving his former town, where he accidentally killed his abusive older sister when she attacked him with a branding iron from the forge. There are still burn scars on his hands and face. Rumors have reached the town that he’s hiding here from the law, though the extent of their truth varies beyond that from person to person. — Arden is the town’s newest resident. He runs the Arden tavern, which he inherited just under a year ago when its former proprietor retired to go raise sheep in the countryside. He and Callie are running an operation to get

The operation saves him enough gold per drink that he’s able to save some money to move away from the town. He and Calliope are pooling their resources to leave together, though they have told no one in town about their romantic relationship, or their plans. — Matilda is the town’s seamstress and tailor. She TILLIE sells gear staples, such as leather belts and pouches, a variety of hats, pirate shirts, skirts, gloves, and bracers. Her shop is well-trafficked, but struggling due to the high prices that Wilda sets for cloth. She’s young and very trusting, so she doesn’t fully understand the extent to which she is being extorted, but she listens to Calliope and admires her, and Calliope speaks poorly of Wilda. She knows very little of what’s going on in town, and so spends the time that she’s not in her shop asking visitors for information.

As guests mill about the main square, sipping drinks and exploring the shops within the surrounding cottages, an older woman makes her way quietly through the crowd. She is finely dressed in gathered skirts and golden jewelry, her white hair pulled back into a silk scarf. Though she is probably in her early seventies, she is far from fragile -- she walks with a decided strength, which communicates to her guests that she is not one to be crossed. As she reaches the center of town, she mounts the pedestal and raises her arms for silence, beckoning the assembled guests closer. (Note: throughout Wilda’s entire speech, the torches and other ambient lights around the town flare and die out in accordance with her mood, giving her an air of magic that is directly connected to the town.) Now, would you like to hear more on the town's founding? [He pauses for audience interaction. A terrible storm brought our Captain Wildsmith to this very cove, and she fell in love with it as I had. Her ship was in tatters, her crew near exhaustion, but they made it to this shore, where nothing stood but an old, crumbling warehouse and a swarm of marsh bugs You know of them, right? . [He asks around, looking increasingly disappointed with each denial. His ears droop.] They hover close to the ground in swarms and light the earth with a truly magical glow. I used to rest here on my travels just to see them. And it was on one such night that I met Wilda. The next time I saw her in that place, she had been on several more adventures, and told me of the magic she had learned. Magic makes quick work of buildings and roads, as you might imagine. It was not even a month later that a whole town had sprung up in the cove, protected and provided for by Wilda. It remains one of my favorite places to set up shop. And if you keep your eyes open at just the right time of night, you can still see the marsh bugs glowing in the trees. Now...would you like to hear more about the Captain? What's your point? GWYDION As my friend so gently suggests, there is a greater 'point' to all of this. Wilda Wildsmith is many things, but she is not a witch. The magic she uses to maintain this town is not her own. It was stolen-- from me. [A brief pause for effect.] You see, I was once known as the Mage of the Maelstrom. I could bend the seas to my will with a turn of my staff, shattering galleons upon the rocks with ease as they approached the shores of my tower. I nearly took down the entire pirate operation in the Southern Seas by conjuring great storms to lead them astray. It was glorious! And then... [He looks distant, quieting himself suddenly as his voice rises too loud.]
  • 26. Created using Celtx I became careless. I summoned my great sea beast, Cetus, to take down a pirate who continually passed too close to my shores. She always managed to elude my storms, so I knew I needed to make a more dramatic move. I imbued the creature with my magic, and sent it to kill her. And she...bested it. I underestimated her, and for that, I paid most dearly. That wretched woman bested my creature, and in doing so…she stole my Heart. [Gwydion doesn't realize that this is funny, or that no one knows what he's talking about. He hangs his head in grief as Callie looks around the room, meeting confused eyes.] CALLIOPE He doesn't hear it. Explain that (Louder, to Gwydion) one to us non-magical folk. [Still tremendously serious, Gwydion looks up. His eyes are intense and a bit wild, his tone deathly low.] GWYDION A wizard's Heart is not the same as the organ in your chest. It is his source of magic, the very essence which allows him to cast. Without it, he is without power entirely, which is why it must be so carefully protected. Most keep it close. Once a wizard's power manifests, so too does his Heart, and the opportunity to forge it into whatever he wishes. Some keep their Hearts as glowing flames atop their highest keeps, others as gemstones in their staffs. They are eternally malleable, ever changing, so that a wizard may carry their magic with them wherever they may go, and keep it well hidden. I imbued my sea creature with the power of my Heart so that I might control it from my keep -- and that is where I met my downfall. Captain Wildsmith slayed my creature and took my power for herself. And alas, she has not made the same mistake that I did. She has never been parted from this stolen power. Until now. CALLIOPE Wilda always keeps the heart on her belt in a canvas satchel. Tonight, Gwydion tells me he saw her entering the blacksmith’s shop and leaving without it. Seems she’s nervous about it being stolen, and is having her friend look after it. This is good news for us.

And if a sense of morality is not enough to sway you…perhaps you will be tempted by a reward of gold. CALLIOPE I don’t want any of you to feel badly about this. Wilda has spent her life taking all she can from others and only caring for herself. She controls everything in this town, as both merchant and monarch. This plan will merely help those of us she has abused and forgotten to regain the upper hand. We’ve stood idly by for far too long, hoping she would change. It’s apparent now that she’s never going to. GWYDION You’ve a way with words, Calliope. CALLIOPE Shush. I believe I have a plan that will work, but it requires all of you. We will need two groups to infiltrate the storeroom behind the blacksmith’s shop — one to distract Ignatius, and another to sneak in and steal the heart. Fortunately, the blacksmith’s storeroom is connected to the tailor’s storeroom, so we can sneak a group in through the tailor’s shop. Tillie is a friend of mine, so she should let us in. But before we do anything…two groups, please. If you’re interested in infiltration and are up for a bit of lifting, with me. If not, with Gwydion. [The guests split into groups.] CALLIOPE Excellent. I was hoping I’d (Aside, to her group.) get you lot. We’re going to need to approach Tillie with a delivery, so follow me when we leave here. There are some empty crates beside the tavern that you can carry into the shop. When you get there, tell her that you have a delivery, and she should let you into the access corridor. From there, leave the empty crates in the hall and enter the blacksmith’s shop from the other door. The heart should be there, though you may have to dig for it. Wilda keeps it in a brown satchel with golden strings. And of course, we’ll need to keep our stories straight. If she asks, what should we be delivering? Any ideas?

If they suggest something other than a fabric, she will ask for a type of cloth instead, and maybe ask the guest if they’re familiar with what a tailor does. So we’re all clear, in these crates is a delivery of imported [fabric] from the Cleaver Coast. All the crates around here have Wildbrand’s stamp on them, so she shouldn’t question that the delivery is from Wilda’s ships. I’ll show you where the crates are, and we can get going. GWYDION So you’re the competent ones, (Aside, to his group.) I assume? Good. You have the much more difficult task, if I am to be honest with you…but you seem more than up to the challenge. I cannot go with you, but Calliope will be nearby. Your job is to distract the blacksmith as your friends over there retrieve the heart. I can tell you that Ignatius is an intimidating man, but an approachable one. He will speak to you for a long time about his work If you get him started. It’s best not to ask him anything — he will refuse to speak about his family personal or his past. Rumor has it that he is hiding out here from the law after committing a murder in his homeland. If you broach the subject, he will surely end the conversation and return inside. You must not allow him to do that until Calliope gives you the high sign. Is that perfectly understood? He awaits audience confirmation. Grand. I shall remain here and eagerly await your successful return. He raises a single finger, leaning in close to the group. You would be wise not to betray me at any point during this operation. I would hate for any of you to end up on the wrong side of history. Calliope takes the groups around the front of the inn. Here, she shows one group where to get crates and walks with them into the tailor’s shop.

I had to do something with all that sugar I was running through the islands, and my crews were drinking so much rum on shore leave that I thought I might as well start making something off of it. It can be nice to have an honest business to fall back on. Well…honest enough. The crown never comes snooping around these parts, so it’s not as though I have to declare what I’m earning. Or that it even exists at all. Plenty of pirate-run ports around here to sell to tax-free. It’s a positive for everybody involved. And I do rather like being in charge of a small conglomerate. My aptitude for magic grows stronger every day, and you have no shortage of enemies in the area who would be happy to teach me. GWYDION Enough with the empty threats, old woman. You haven't the stomach to kill me. [Wilda draws her sword and mounts the stage, pressing the tip to Gwydion's chest, right above his heart.] WILDA This will be your final warning.
