DEFENDING TOMORROW
The climate crisis and threats against land and environmental defenders
The climate crisis is arguably the greatest global and existential threat we face. As it escalates, it serves to exacerbate many of the other serious problems in our world today – from economic inequality to racial injustice and the spread of zoonotic diseases.
For years, land and environmental defenders have been the first line of defence against the causes and impacts of climate breakdown. Time after time, they have challenged those companies operating recklessly, rampaging unhampered through forests, skies, wetlands, oceans and biodiversity hotspots.

Myanmar Amber traps scientists in ethical dilemma over funding warMYO AUNG Myanmar
Myanmar is a major producer of amber, a fossilized tree resin. Amber is valued for jewelry, and also serves as a sort of time capsule that provides scientific clues to prehistoric life with fossilized inclusions such as insects, birds and dinosaur footprints.
Meanwhile, the main amber-mining areas in the country are located in an internal conflict zone where an ethnic minority is fighting against the national armed forces, and the amber also comes with problems of human rights violations and smuggling.

Sesame Market Systems Development in Myanmar-•Jan 7, 2019 WinrockIntl
Ma Khin Mar Htay is from a farming family in Magway Township, Myanmar, located in the country’s arid Central Dry Zone, an area known for its sesame production. In the past, farmers like Htay have been unable to earn good prices for their sesame, in part due to quality issues but also because they lacked export markets. But that dynamic is changing. With support from USAID’s Value Chains for Rural Development project, implemented by Winrock International, sesame farmers are adopting new agricultural practices and earning quality premiums from export buyers. In this video, Htay explains how smallholder sesame farmers are organizing into groups like the Sesame Farmers Development Association, which allows them to attract financing and investment, offer tractor rentals and discounted purchases of improved inputs, and negotiate deals directly with buyers. With support from USAID and Winrock, smallholder farmers are contributing to inclusive, agriculture-led economic growth in Myanmar.
Winrock International is a recognized leader in U.S. and international development, providing solutions to some of the world’s most complex social, agricultural and environmental challenges. Inspired by its namesake Winthrop Rockefeller, Winrock’s mission is to empower the disadvantaged, increase economic opportunity and sustain natural resources. Winrock combines technical expertise with entrepreneurial innovation to improve lives around the globe.

Military Capitalism in Myanmar: Examining the Origins, Continuities and Evolution of "Khaki Capital" (ISEAS Trends, 2019)
Yusof Ishak Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) Trends Series, 2019Gerard McCarthy
Gerard McCarthy
Myanmar is one of the most highly militarized societies in Southeast Asia and, indeed, the world. If soldiers, veterans and their families alone are considered, the lives of over 3 million people are currently or could in the future be directly shaped by military institutions and conglomerates which dominate major sectors of Myanmar’s economy. This report examines the origins and evolution of military capitalism in Myanmar and its contemporary implications for reform of civil–military relations, veteran welfare and the peace process. It draws on interviews with thirty- eight veterans, civil servants, business people, policymakers, researchers and others with experience of military affairs and conglomerates conducted between September and November 2018. The report argues that more balanced civil–military relations, and fairer social outcomes for military personnel, will rely on civilian-led state institutions delivering effective and substantive welfare support beyond the commercially oriented welfare arrangements of military conglomerates.

Military Capitalism in Myanmar: Examining the Origins, Continuities and Evolution of "Khaki Capital" (ISEAS Trends, 2019)

In this talk we'll compare measures that are effective against static attackers and how to battle a dynamic attacker who adapts to your counter-measures.
