This document provides a summary of influential Black historical figures from 1774 to the present. It discusses how slavery stripped Black people of their identities and culture. Key figures highlighted include Marcus Garvey who advocated for Black nationalism and nationhood, Malcolm X who promoted race pride, Ivan Van Sertima who sought to rewrite Black history accurately, and Bob Marley who sang about emancipating minds from mental slavery. The document honors these and other figures like Mary McLeod Bethune, Queen Hatshepsut, Booker T. Washington, Hannibal Barca, and Prophet Drew Ali for their roles in shaping Black history and empowering Black communities.
With the advent of html5, css3, Microformats and wai-aria we now have the ability to design our web applications with a semantic richness that can help bridge the gap between human and computer readability and make the web a more accessible place.
Unfortunately, despite the advancements of the web standards movement, many of us largely ignore or misunderstand front-end technologies.
Can we take pride in being called “craftsmen” if we continue to hastily construct the most public facing ends of our software, with code viewable by anyone!?
As craftsmen, we owe our namesakes to our willingness to go beyond the status quo. Our applications should be designed and built in such a way that they are usable, accessible, and responsive—front-end and back, for as many people/devices as possible.
As a User Experience craftsman, I view s.c.n.a. as an opportunity to help my developer colleagues better understand html5, css3 and basic client-side design principles in the spirit of working together toward a more meaningful web.
Just as musicians have employed the inherent magic of certain numerical relationships to lend consonance and/or dissonance to their musical scores, and just as architects, scribes, typographers, and craftsmen have used these ratios to lend humane or aesthetically pleasing proportions to their buildings, books, passages, and furniture so too can we [web professionals] use these numbers to satisfy the ends of our designs.
Ontology learning tools aim to automate the process of building ontologies from various data sources using machine learning and other AI techniques. Most current tools are semi-automatic and require human validation and input. They can learn from text alone using natural language processing, from text combined with existing ontologies, or from structured knowledge bases and ontologies. However, ontology learning remains a challenging task and current tools have limitations such as requiring large amounts of high-quality input data and rules specified by experts.
This document summarizes a project report on evaluating different machine learning techniques for protein function prediction, called the Proteome Analyst problem. The techniques explored include Naive Bayes (generative vs discriminative learning), Tree-Augmented Naive Bayes (TAN), neural networks, and other classifiers from the WEKA data mining system. While Naive Bayes has been applied successfully previously, the authors aim to find an approach with better classification accuracy and faster execution time. Their empirical analysis found Support Vector Machines achieved better accuracy than Naive Bayes with comparable training speed.
