Kuala Lumpur was captured by Japanese forces during World War 2 but returned to British control in 1945 after Japan's surrender. Malaysia gained independence from Britain on August 31, 1957 under Tunku Abdul Rahman, celebrated with cries of "Merdeka!". The city faces environmental issues as endangered species like tigers and dholes lack sufficient water and food due to the large human population exceeding 1 million residents.
