Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by purging through vomiting or laxative use. People with bulimia nervosa feel a lack of control over their eating which is often triggered by emotions and interrupted by others. Left untreated, bulimia nervosa can lead to dental problems, electrolyte imbalances, and rupture of the stomach or intestines. It typically develops during late adolescence or early adulthood and affects mostly women.
