Proposition 400 would slightly increase Tempe's hospitality tax on hotel rooms from 3% to 5% to generate around $1.5 million annually for tourism promotion. This would help attract more visitors and tourism revenue to benefit Tempe businesses and jobs while lowering the tax burden on residents. Only hotel guests would pay the tax. Research shows each dollar invested in tourism returns $34 to the community. The Mayor, City Council members, hotels, and visitors bureau support Proposition 400 as positive for Tempe's economic health and jobs.
Stephanie Nowack, President and CEO of the Tempe Convention and Visitors Bureau, was elected President of the Western Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus (WACVB) at their annual meeting in Colorado Springs. Nowack has been active in WACVB for nine years, holding the position of Education & Research Foundation President for the past five years. She will use her experience to continue her leadership role as the new WACVB President.

$15 million Sea Life Aquarium Scheduled to
Open in Tempe in June 2010
The company behind Madame Tussauds and the London Eye,
Merlin Entertainments, is now building a Sea Life Aquarium at
Tempe's Arizona Mills mall. It is scheduled to open in June
2010.
UK-based Merlin is the world's biggest aquarium operator with
31 Sea Life attractions in Europe to date. Its first Sea Life
center in the United States opened two years ago alongside
Legoland California. Last year, Merlin acquired the
Underwater Adventures Aquarium inside the Mall of America
in Minneapolis.
Sea Life Arizona will be 26,000 square feet with 12 different
habitat zones housing over 30 display tanks. It will take
visitors on a journey from Phoenix's lakes through river
canyons and caves to the Cabo san Lucas shoreline. Then,
visitors will take a trip off shore to explore a coral shoaling
ring, a bay of rays and an underwater tunnel, complete with
sharks and other deep ocean dwellers.
