Eels to face Tigers in Preliminary Final
03 September 2015
Written by Mary-Anne Maio
Eels are through to the Reserve Grade Shield Preliminary Final after demolishing Titans 72-6 at their homeground
of Dry Creek on Sunday afternoon.
It was a one-sided game in favour of the Eels with Peter Garcia setting up a scoring opportunity for prop Chris
Davison in the opening minutes of the game.
The Eels immediately continued their strong run through Nigel Dennis who made good ground and despite strong
defensive pressure from the Titans, this play resulted in Matt Justice scoring the second try for the match.
The Titans retaliated with Elliot Glendenning, Leroy Nash and Colin Liddle all making multiple scoring attempts,
but these were consistently jarred by the Eels defensive pressure.
Halfway through the first term, an offload from James Huntley to Robert Reynolds led to the Eels scoring a penalty
try and stretching their lead to 18-0.
Swift movement between Eels Nathan Campbell, Robert Jeffrey, Huntley, and Steven Congdon set up another
scoring opportunity for Davison despite Titans Telea Alofa making a sharp intercept.
With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Titans began to increase their speed and agility with multiple
scoring attempts by Titans Bevan Johnston, Matt Naughton and Colin Liddle. But each attempt was matched by
the Eels strong defensive pressure. Scoring on the halftime siren, Eels Huntley stretched his team’s score to 36-
0 at halftime.
The second half saw much of the same style of play delivered by the Eels, although the Titans desire for points
became more evident.
Good ground was made by Titans Aaron Harre and Alofa within the opening minutes of the second half, but it
was Huntley who scored two tries early for his side along with one to Jeffrey who added to the Eels lead early in
the term.
The Titans earnt some well-deserved points when Glendenning crossed the line at the 15th
minute mark. But the
Eels quickly retaliated with the final margin at 66 points.
Best on ground was Eels James Huntley who scored five tries and eight conversions. Other standout players
were Eels Chris Davison and Titans Telea Alofa.
