Mother's Day originated as a call by activist Julia Ward Howe for peace and Mother's Day celebrations in Boston in 1872. Activist Ann Jarvis continued organizing meetings for mothers in the 1880s. When Jarvis's mother died in 1905, her daughter began a campaign to memorialize her, leading to the official recognition and establishment of Mother's Day in the United States in 1914 under President Woodrow Wilson. Over time, the celebration of Mother's Day has spread around the world on different dates.
