Montage was originally developed in Soviet film theory as an approach to editing that creates symbolic meaning. However, in modern cinema montage is used more as a tool rather than a style, through a series of short, rapidly edited shots to suggest the passage of time or reinforce a message. Sports training montages in particular involve an athlete confronting their need to train harder through an intense individual training regimen. While montage remains a common cinematic technique, its use has become more of a cliché that has lost the original theoretical motivation behind its creation.
