Implemented by Earth System Science Organisation & Ministry of Earth Science, the
main objective of Monsoon Mission is to improve monsoon prediction in the country by
setting up state of the art dynamic model frame work.
Proposed process of implementation
Supposed to be implemented during the upcoming five year plan, this mission will be
undertaken through two submissions on two different time scales.
(a). Extended range to seasonal forecasts for summer monsoon rainfall over the Indian
region.
(b). Short to medium range forecasts for rainfall, temperature etc.
Monitoring & Reviewing of the Mission
For the purpose the Earth System Sciences Organisation has constituted two separate
committees for monitoring, reviewing and successfully running of the programme.
Impact / Benefits from the Mission
The mission will ensure the successful implementation of the dynamic prediction system
for accurate prediction of the monsoon, which is highly desirable in a country like India
whose agriculture is mainly dependent on the nature of the monsoon. This mission can
prove to be a boom not only for agriculture but in Water Resource Management, Drought
Management, Disaster Management, Power Generation etc.
Importance from the Examination Point of View:
i) Define Monsoon Mission. What are its main objectives? Who all are the main
organisations involved in the implementation of the mission?
ii) Examine the relevance of implementing Monsoon Mission Programme in India. What
all benefits can be reaped out by implementing this programme in Indian context?
