Mongolia has a cold climate with long, dry winters and short summers, receiving 20-35 cm of rainfall annually. Over half the country is covered in permafrost and average temperatures remain below freezing. The country's key landforms include the Altai Mountains which contain natural resources, the Mongolian Plateau used for grazing, the mineral-rich Gobi Desert, the agricultural Mongolia Plain, and the Onen River which provides a water source.
