Summarizing is a process that helps students engage in learning by condensing information from texts into shorter summaries. While adolescent students are familiar with summarizing, many have not mastered how to properly summarize texts, as the process can vary depending on factors like the content area. Providing students with regular practice summarizing will improve their skills at condensing information and support their learning across different subject areas.

1. Summarizing
 Summarizing is a process that supports student ability to
engage in the learning process.
 Adolescent students are acquainted with the general concept
of summarizing; however, many of them have not fully
grasped the process of summarizing.
 Even though there is a specific process for summarizing, the
nature of the process varies with the text, and text varies
across the content areas.
 Consequently, all students – even middle and high school
students – need lots of summarizing practice.
 Student ability to summarize supports their content-area
learning.
