Natural gas was evaluated as an energy source in a scenario where carbon emissions are taxed. A 174-page MIT study from 2011 examined how competitive natural gas would be compared to other energy sources given lower carbon standards. The study concluded that hydraulic fracturing technology used in shale gas drilling is safe when properly implemented and regulated.
