Kanji was a wealthy but miserly businessman who lived in a small village. Fearing that keeping his money in his house was unsafe, he decided to bury it in a pot underground near a tree in his backyard. Every night, Kanji would dig up the pot to count his money before going to sleep. However, his suspicious neighbor observed Kanji's nightly routine and stole the money, replacing it with pebbles. When Kanji discovered the pebbles, he was distraught. The village headman consoled Kanji, telling him that as long as he could continue counting, the money was serving its purpose, even if replaced with pebbles.
