2. Imagine this. You like to create a beautiful garden, one that will have
flowering plants, a couple of trees that bear fruit and some shrubs. You buy
the plants and seeds from the nursery and also plan the layout of all the
plants in this garden out in detail. Next, you buy some rich soil, buy manure
and fertilizers and also equip yourself with insecticides just in case you need
it. Great, you are all set to start your dream garden!
You go out and start digging the soil to start planting. And lo! You realize
that the surface is very hard and in some places is cracking up. You put some
water, add the soil you bought on top of this to make the plants stand, but
they don’t as the roots are not able to get through to the surface. Your dream
garden is just not happening leaving you frustrated.

3. Now step back and think about it for a second in the context of organizations.
Companies plan to create their employees into beautiful gardens that will bear
fruit for the organization. And in that context plan a lot and invest in various types
of training and learning and development initiatives, most of which are focused on
developing skills or skillsets. However what is overseen is the soil, in this case the
employee’s mindset.
The soil or the mindset is taken for granted in many cases and the focus continues
to be on the skillsets. If the soil or the mindset is hard then no amount of
investments in skillset would yield fruit. And most often it is seen as the problem
of the employee. While the employee is equally responsible for managing his/ her
soil or the mindset, if the employer needs the fruits of their investments then they
need to work on the soil as well.
So what is required is to loosen the soil before you seed the plants and nurture
them.By focusing on ways and mean of cultivating the right mindset companies
can loosen the oil, paving the way for their investments in skillset to bear fruit.

4. Mindsets are a function of the state of mind and the belief systems. The
most conducive mind sets have the optimum combination of both and the
least conducive have the reverse. By identifying the type of mindset the
employer or leader can then create a plan for working on them. The good
news is that mind sets can be changed very fast with sustained impact,
through specific techniques and methods. If done right the results can be
significant.
Then the critical question is how and how much are the efforts and the
investmentin creating mind sets. Simple. start with the mindset before
every skill set oriented training or development program. By doing so the
investments in skillset will pay off faster and better.
Elementary dear watson. It’s all in the mind.
Live Powerfully!
