Michael Huntsberger proposes turning undergraduate students into "History Detectives" to improve student engagement and the quality of research papers in media history courses. Students would connect their family histories to specific events, people, or issues in U.S. mass media history by researching a communication artifact from their family's past, such as a letter, photograph, or news article. This hands-on research approach allows students to learn historical methods while exploring topics that personally interest them. Examples showed students produced more substantive final papers that connected artifacts like a family member's Civil War journal to broader trends in newspaper coverage. The project enhanced class discussions and student engagement with the material.

This document analyzes the effects of gun law requirements on levels of gun violence across states. It discusses how individual states have enacted their own gun control policies, such as licensing or permitting requirements for gun purchasers. The document then examines California's permit to purchase laws in detail, noting they require background checks, a 10-day waiting period, and a firearm safety certificate. However, California does not require mental health checks. The document hypothesizes that states requiring mental health checks or safety training see less gun violence, and analyzes differences in various states' laws and effects on gun death rates.
