The reporter provides a humorous first-person account of experiencing aerobatic maneuvers from inside an Air National Guard pilot's two-seat plane. Though initially nervous, the reporter is taken on an "upside down" roll and other maneuvers that make him feel sick. The pilot promises a "smooth, easy routine" next but instead puts the plane into a steep vertical climb and drop, causing the reporter to vomit from the g-forces. The article promotes an upcoming air show featuring the pilot's routine.

Early fossil records suggest that the Yangtze River Dolphin came about 25 million years ago, and made its way to the Yangtze 20 million years ago, where it is considered an endemic species.
The Yangtze River dolphin is known by many names. In Chinese, it is known as the Baijie which translates to “White dolphin”, since it has pale blue grey skin which lightens as it ages. In Chinese folklore, the Baijie also protects fishermen as the “Goddess of the River”. Once loved, it was plentiful in the Yangtze river. In the 1950s, there used to be about 6,000 dolphins. Then in the 1980s, the population reduced to 400. Then since 2006, this species was declared functionally extinct. So, why does it matter that this species is gone?
Slide 2
Well, the extinction of the Yangtze River Dolphin is biggest cetacean species extinction of our time. In addition, it highlights the struggle of keeping freshwater resources in Asia. The Yangtze is not only the third longest river in the world, but also home to over half of China’s total plant and animal species. So the death of this dolphin might be our warning bell to save other species from extinction.
Slide 4
The Yangtze River Dolphin is only one in its family Lipodae, and it’s one out of four dolphin families which reside in shallow freshwater rivers.
Slide 5
The dolphin’s got a long beak with 35 blunt teeth to snack on small fish. It’s a carnivore. Like many other dolphins, it communicates through clicks and whistles, which is why it’s got this hole in it’s head. They are social, living in pods from 3 to 7 individuals. However, they are very shy around humans -- which makes it hard for us to perform research on them.
Slide 6
They tend to breed in the months of February through April. As mammals, they have live birth and have a gestation period of 10 months. They’re quite small when born, about 32 to 35 inches but grow up to be as big as 8 feet long. They reach sexual maturity around 6 to 8 years and having a birthing interval of 2 years.
Slide 7
The Yangtze dolphin normally swims 19 to 25 mph, but can go up to 37 mph when threatened. It has poor eyesight in the murky water of the Yangtze, so it relies on echolocation (biosonar) and touch with it’s long thin beak to find small fish to eat. Unfortunately, baijie have been known to have poor navigation, running into boat motors and killing themselves.
Slide 8-9
Which brings us to this point. Half of all known dolphin killings in the 1970s and 1980s were attributed to collisions with motor boats and accidental illegal fishing activities like dynamite fishing, drag netting and electric fishing.

Strategic Cartography: Identifying IL Intersections Across the Curriculumchar booth
Presentation at ACRL 2015 in Portland, OR.
Abstract: Curriculum mapping builds insight into the sequence of requirements and competencies a learner negotiates while on an academic path. When combined with data visualization, visual curriculum mapping (VCM) provides a holistic view of an entire educational community, highlighting pivotal points at which to introduce information literacy instruction, resources, and research support. This paper presents findings of a large-scale consortial VCM project in 2013-14, exploring anticipated and unanticipated outcomes and offering strategies applicable to other institutions.

Reporter mans cockpit for airshow
preview & admits he’s no ‘Top Gun’
PLANE
CRAZY!
ONE MINUTE, BLUE SKIES were above
me and Long Island lay below. The next,
my world flipped.
The sky was where suburbia was sup-
posed to be — and screams echoed through
the cockpit of the plane. My screams.
“You like that?” asked Maj. John Klatt of
the Air National Guard when we were right
side up again.
“Yeah,” I told the sadist. “Wonderful.”
Klatt is a featured act in this weekend’s
airshow over Jones Beach State Park, an
aerial extravaganza that includes the U.S.
Navy’s famous Blue Angels and runs from
10 a.m. through 3 p.m. today and Sunday.
Klatt gave me a sneak preview of the 13-
minute routine he will perform — and I got
to see it from inside his two-seat Air Guard
Extra 300.
BeforewetookofffromRepublicAirport
in Farmingdale, L.I., the Minnesota flyboy
assured me he’d never crashed and confid-
ed that his insurance policy would make his
wife an instant millionaire if he did.
That should have been my cue to run.
“Do you have a name for your routine?”
I asked.
“Hard-core acrobatics,” he said.
The second cue to run.
Instead, I climbed aboard. And as soon
as we were airborne, Klatt suggested we
start off with a little upside down flying.
After the first 360-degree roll, my stom-
ach told my head I had made a terrible mis-
take. “I’m going to be sick,” I said, reaching
for the barf bag.
Klatt wasn’t done with me. As we round-
ed the Statue of Liberty Klatt promised
“a smooth, easy routine” before we head-
ed back.
Suddenly, the nose of the plane was
pointed straight up and we were fall-
ing, and falling, and falling. And
as we fell, the chicken cutlet
sandwichI’dhadforlunch
rose in my throat — to my
everlasting shame.

Penguins let Wings worryTHE ASSOCIATED PRESS
PITTSBURGH — Yeah, hock-
ey’s version of Kids “R” Us, the
Pittsburgh Penguins, certainly is
reeling under the pressure of
the Stanley Cup Finals.
Sidney Crosby is joking about
Gary Roberts’ 42nd birthday,
which is only 22 birthdays more
than Crosby has celebrated. A
few minutes before, Crosby and
Evgeni Malkin battled playfully
for the puck near the side of the
net during practice, neither
wanting to be outdone by the
other.
Coach Michel Therrien picks
up a stick and tries to steer a
shot past goalie Marc-Andre
Fleury, something the Senators,
Rangers and Flyers couldn’t do
with regularity during the East-
ern Conference playoffs.
The Penguins begin their first
Stanley Cup Finals in 16 years
tonight in Detroit, against a
proud, experienced and deep
Red Wings team that is going for
its fourth Cup in 11 seasons.
If the Penguins are awed by
their opponent, the situation or
the circumstances, they’re not
showing it. Nor are they show-
ing their age, not with eight
players who are 25 or younger
compared to the nine Red Wings
who are 35 or older.
“I don’t feel that group’s
nervous because we’re well pre-
pared,” Therrien said yesterday.
“I feel that group has a lot of
excitement. It’s the same thing
for the coaches; I’m not ner-
vous. We can’t wait to start.
We’re ready to play.”
Sure, the Red Wings have
playoff-hardened players who
were winning Cups before Pen-
guins players such as Crosby,
the 21-year-old Malkin and
19-year-old Jordan Staal were
born. So give the Red Wings the
edge in experience, the Pen-
guins the advantage in exuber-
ance.
“This is not a group that’s too
nervous, this is not a group that
feels pressure,” Therrien said.
“There’s two ways to handle the
pressure, I believe: You feel the
pressure or you put the pressure
on. That’s our philosophy: You
put the pressure on, by the way
we’re playing.”
To do that, the Penguins want
to force the Red Wings to adjust
and adapt to their speed and tal-
ent, and not the other way
around.
It’s all about us, the Penguins
said, not about the Red Wings.
“We play our game, they do
whatever they do,” forward
Jarkko Ruutu said. “There’s no
reason to change things. They
may change but we don’t worry
about their system too much.
We’re not going to match things
to the way they play.”
