Editor's Notes

  • #2 My name is Carolyn Huang and I’m representing Buddhut.
  • #3 Today I’m going to tell you a little bit about Buddyhut and our mission. First, though, I have a story to share about a friend of mine.
  • #4 This is Tom. Tom is a sophomore at USC and a BME major. He sleeps at ten p.m. everynight, wakes up at 6 a.m. every morning for his daily jog. He likes to listen to Top 40 music, is allergic to strawberries, and likes his room clean. Tom is currently looking for a roommate next year, but doesn’t know who to ask.
  • #5 Tom took a look at the USC University Housing website and wasn’t too satisfied. He had to take a brief survey about his living preferences, and was linked with other roommates through the university’s algorithm system. Tom didn’t really like how little freedom he had, so he decided to explore his other options.
  • #6 So Tom takes a look at his other options. Other than the USC University Housing website, he finds a Facebook group for people seeking USC Housing. He looks around and sees that, yes, a lot of people have posted on the website. Some of those people seem pretty cool. But some have profile pictures of USC memes, or some look over 30. Tom doesn’t really know who to contact, and he doesn’t know much about what they’re offering.
  • #7 The Group Info on the side seems like it might be helpful in guiding posters looking for roommates, but for some reason, no one seems to be following the rules. Tom is confused and a little bit skeptical, so he decides to look elsewhere.
  • #8 He finds an advertisement on the Housing group page for Jack’s Rental Search. This website seems to be a little bit better. It lets him choose a page based on his school, then directs him to housing options, properties, and roommates. The site even has email alerts. But it doesn’t seem to be too reliable. Only one person is listed as searching for a roommate, and apparently, Jack from Jack’s Rental Search found the roommate ad on Craigslist.
  • #9 Tom has heard about Craigslist, and after clicking around, he doesn’t think he really trusts the site. Especially when it comes to looking for a roommate. Tom didn’t realize that Men seeking women, or men seeking men, wasn’t really someone looking for a college roommate…
  • #10 So Tom, who used to be a happy boy, has explored all his options, and he’s kind of run out of steam.
  • #11 To be honest, Tom is sad. He’s disappointed, disparaged, and still doesn’t know who he’s going to room with next year even though he searched everywhere online.
  • #12 He’s very worried that he’ll be forever alone.
  • #13 The good thing is, Tom doesn’t have to worry anymore. Not when buddyhut comes around!
  • #14 Tom is looking for somewhere safe.
  • #15 Reliable.
  • #16 Trustworthy.
  • #17 Secure.
  • #18 And user-friendly. Lucky for him, buddyhut is all of those!
  • #19 Buddyhut is safe because ONLY University students have access to it. No creepy older people can fish around on the website, no men come here to seek women.
  • #20 It’s reliable in that it will always be available, 24 hour a day, 7 days a week online. Unlike the University system, which shuts down when housing closes, users can always find theirs and others’ profiles on buddyhut, and can always make connections.
  • #21 It’s also trustworthy. It’s a network where only students have access, and can search based on university. By looking at people’s profiles, which are also linked to their Facebooks, Tom can see who his potential roommates are, what they’re like, based on their Facebook profiles, and who they know. Maybe he’ll have mutual friends with that person and can ask his friends about the potential roommate, maybe he’ll realize that this person’s favorite movie is “Elf,” just like him. Either way, Tom can get a lot more information about his roommate without a lot of the hassle of contacting them first.
  • #22 And buddyhut is secure. It verifies that users are officially enrolled students by using their USC emails.
  • #23 Lastly,buddyhut is user friendly. He can look for his roommates not only by name, but also by habit and preferred living arrangements. He can check their profiles, contact them easily through a messaging system, and isn’t limited to matches algorithms make. Tom has a lot more freedom, and is a lot more satisfied with buddyhut.
  • #24 Thanks to buddyhut, Tom feels like he has a sturdy shoulder, and a happy roommate, to lean on.
