This document presents the development of a microgrid central controller and hierarchical control system in the Intelligent Microgrid Lab at Aalborg University. The lab contains several inverter-based microgrid setups that can operate independently or be interconnected. Local primary control is implemented on dSPACE controllers while a LabVIEW-based central controller coordinates secondary and tertiary control functions. An example case of voltage/frequency restoration and voltage unbalance compensation is tested using hierarchical control across the different levels. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of the overall control system.
