1. Michael Costello Interview
Miami Fashion Week is a great way to promote upcoming designers and people in the
fashion industry. Not only do you get to view the collections of these brilliant artists but
sometimes you even get to meet them in person. Miami Fashion Network was lucky enough to
interview the fabulous Michael Costello at the Delano Hotel in Miami Beach, FL, May 16th. The
meet and greet was advertised on Twitter for any fans, bloggers and press. Michael arrived
humbly in jean shorts and a t-shirt, portraying a comfortable, confident look. His excitement
and anxiousness for his showcase Saturday night really made everyone eager to see what he
had in store for everyone. Despite all the hype, Michael kept it light and humorous throughout
the entire interview.
Michael Costello is a 29 year old, California native. His first big debut was on the show
Project Runway, finishing in 4th place but it all started when Michael was two-year-old. The
designer loved to draw and design dresses at a very young age, his parents thought it was just a
phase but Michael knew designing clothes was his calling. After he created his first couture
collection at 14, Michael opened up his own store in Palm Springs, CA at the age of fifteen.
Costello took an internship with Bob Mackie for a year and then went on to take a job at
Claire’s developing apparel. Michael has dressed celebrities like Beyoncé, Paris Hilton, Toni
Braxton, Selma Hayek and many more.
Michael explained that his favorite piece in his collection is a gown inspired by Priscilla
Presley when she married Elvis Presley. He identified the dress as having a Palm Springs, CA
look to it with a 60’s twist. The Valley of the Dolls was an example Michael used when
2. describing the garment and how that era was so easy going and sexy. He wouldn’t reveal what
the dress looked like but he said we would be able to recognize his favored dress when we saw
it on the runway Saturday night.
When asked where he would like to be in five years with his collection, Michael put his
faith in God and the plan he has for him. He also desires to develop a line for the everyday
woman of any size, style or budget. Michael even named Target as a place he would love to sell
his clothes at a more affordable price.
The tip that Michael gave to new and upcoming designers on the scene is to always be
true to yourself and never compromise your creations for someone else. He doesn’t think
fitting in and adhering to the norm is necessary. Also, he believes if you have a goal to push
yourself to achieve it because you never know where it can take you.
