Five Mexican boy cadets aged 13 to 19 fought until sunrise to resist an invasion by American troops in Chapultapec Castle on September 13, 1847. While five boys were killed, the last surviving cadet Juan Escutia leapt from the castle wrapped in the Mexican flag to protect it. Mexico celebrates Independence Day on September 16, commemorating Miguel Hidalgo initiating the independence movement from Spain in 1810. On November 20, Mexico celebrates the anniversary of its Revolution starting in 1910 to overthrow dictator Porfirio Diaz who had seized power after previous rebellions.
