Bordered by the clear sea, covered with white rocks, sunlit by the Mediterranean sun, Montenegro is one of the last European oases to which one can flow from the

However you Reach Montenegro, through whichever ”door” you enter, you will encounter intact nature and be welcomed by hospitable, proud and friendly people.

There are many deep and long canyons in Montenegro, but there are not many like Platije – canyon of the river Moraca, which is truly amazing.
There are some parts of the canyon whose rocks are sharpened like diamonds and are so polished that only lichens and mosses can live on them. The sun illuminates rocks of the canyon in so many ways that every time you pass it you can see different colors and shadows, immortalized in paintings of many painters - not only from Montenegro.
Tara River is the longest river of Montenegro (156 km). Tara River is derived of rivers of Opasnica and Verusa and of winter snow and seasonal rains, with its source in the foot of Komovi Mountains, and together with Piva River, close to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, forms Drina River from Scepan polje. Tara River carved one of the deepest canyon gorges in the world which is 93 km long and more than 1300 meters high what make Tara River Canyon the deepest river canyon in Europe and the second deepest canyon in the world right after the Colorado River canyon. Protected by UNESCO since 1977, Tara River Canyon is one of the top 25 recognized world nature heritage sites, accessible for hikers and bikers. Tara River water quality and purity is so clean that you can drink water from it. All along its flow, the Tara River gets large quantities of water from numerous sources, and form breathtaking waterfalls and scenic cascades, whose roar is heard on the very peaks of the canyon. There are rocky and pebbly terraces surrounded with thick pine forests, sandy beaches, high cliffs, steep sides and more than 80 large caves along the Tara River Canyon.
Part of the river Tara, known as “Tear of Europe” runs through in the National Park “Durmitor”.
The Monastery of Ostrog is a monastery of the Serb Orthodox Church located along the almost vertical cliff, high on the mountain call Ostroska greda (beams of Ostrog) with a view of the plains Bjelopavlici. It is in north part of Montenegro near Niksic, near village Bogetici.
Ostrog Monastery is dedicated to Sveti Vasilije Ostroski – Saint Basil of Ostrog who is his founder (17th century). He was buried there, and proclaimed a saint miracle worker. His body rests in a cave in the church. The monastery was rebuilt 1923-1926 after the fire, which had been spared cave churches. They represent a major heritage value... Ostrog Monastery is the most popular pilgrimage place in Montenegro. Ostrog Monastery complex comprises two parts, the first of which, the larger lower monastery is situated around the Church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1824, containing the majority of the monastic residences, including the Dormitory.
The white, rock-hewn upper Ostrog Monastery, a tough tiny 3 km walk uphill (accessible by car also), holds two diminutive cave-churches, one of which, the Holy Cross, features some splendid rock-painted frescoes by the great seventeenth-century Serbian artists-fresco painters Jovan and Radul, depicting revered saints (including St Sava and one of St Basil), scenes from the life of Christ, and religious holidays.

The Gulf of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) cuts deeply into the coastline of the southern part of the Yugoslav Adriatic, creating four spectacular bays ringed in mountains, the “fjords” of the Mediterranean. The little town of Perast is situated at the foot of St. Elijah Hill (873 m), opposite the narrow Verige strait, where the innermost bays of Risan and Kotor converge. This easternmost shore was the earliest inhabited area in the Boka. The remains of a Neolithic culture (3500 BC) have been discovered in the caves of Spila above Perast and various archaeological finds provide evidence of civilization dating from Illyrian, Roman and early Christian periods.
Preceded by two jewel-like islands, Perast is focused on the sea. From the interaction between mainland and bay, the inherent contrast of stone and water, the dialogue of island and wave, sometimes in harmony but often in conflict, this sea-faring town has derived its unity, strength and sense of purpose. Despite its size, a sophisticated urban structure has arisen, demonstrated by the proportion, scale, massing and rhythm of the great number of public buildings, especially along the waterfront.
Kotor is situated on the southeastern part of Boka bay, on a foothill of the mountain Lovcen. The area of community of Kotor is 355 km2. Kotor is cultural, educational, economical and sport center of this area.
As the only fiord on the Mediterranean, Boka Kotorska was added to the list of twenty five the most beautiful bays in the world in July 2000, the others being mainly in Scandinavia. The history of Kotor can be traced to the most ancient times. In the surrounding caves there have been found various tools and ceramics witnessing humane existence from the Neolithic period, as well as drawings on the walls of the cave at Lipci near Risan.
In the antique period the Illyrian tribal state was the first organized humane community on these territories. Roman conquest began by the end of the third century BC and since the year 169 BC these territories had been under the rule of Rome, and then were taken over by the Byzantines. The first Slav tribes settled there in the 12th century. Its first state was Doclea, later called Zeta. Since the end of the 12th century Kotor was in power of the members of the Nemanjic Dynasty until 1420 when the Republic of Venice occupied it and stayed there until 1797, the time of the Napoleon wars in Europe. After the stormy period from 1797 to 1814 when this area was alternately under the Russians, French, Austrians and Montenegrins, at the Vienna Congress in 1814, Kotor became the constituent of the Austro-Hungary Monarchy and remained under the rule of Austro-Hungary until 1918 when this region became a part of Yugoslavia until its disintegration.
For its unique mixture of different cultures, Kotor entered the list of the world cultural heritage under the protection of the UNESCO. In the past, the most developed industry in this area was trade and maritime affairs. Seafarers used to bring different products from overseas which they would exchange for the goods they were in need of. In that way Kotor became one of the most important trading centers in this part of the Adriatic coast.
