Men have traditionally been portrayed in art as physically strong or financially successful. In early Benin culture, male figures stood with energy and command. In the 14th-15th centuries, physical fitness through hunting and fighting demonstrated masculinity rather than wealth. Today, art often depicts masculinity through power and social status rather than strength.

2. Opening Statement Throughout the ages the portrayal of men in art and design has evolved in many ways. One theme we have observed is the definition of masculinity as being portrayed through material success as opposed to strength.

4. 14th and 15th Century This figure shows the male as being physically fit. In this time period he would be able to provide for his family through hunting and fighting, not through financial wealth.
