Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

2. Primul magalopolis al lumii, cristalizat după cel de–al doilea război
mondial, Boswash–ul, rămâne cel mai tipic, reprezentând, în acelaşi timp,
cea mai puternică concentrare mondială de bunuri materiale şi umane.
Beneficiind de ţărmuri propice amenajărilor portuare, cât şi de poziţia
geografică foarte avantajoasă atât pentru pătrunderea în interiorul
continentului, cât şi pentru intensificarea legăturilor economice cu
Europa, oraşele din zona litorală s-au dezvoltat vertiginos, mai ales în a
doua jumătate a secolului trecut şi prima jumătate a secolului XX.
Creşterea rapidă a populaţiei pe baza imigrărilor masive, conjugată cu
posibilităţi reduse de dezvoltare a aşezărilor spre interior (datorită
Munţilor Apalaşi) a determinat o extindere a suprafeţelor urbane în
câmpia litorală şi respectiv o contopire a oraşelor, formând un mare
areal urban, extins aproape continuu de la Boston la Washington.
Lungimea totală a megalopolisului este de aproape de 1000 km. având o
lăţime ce oscilează între 40 şi 150 km. Cu o suprafaţă de circa 140.000
km 2 , Boswash-ul depăşeşte jumătate din suprafaţa României şi reprezintă
cca. 2% din suprafaţa S.U.A. Populaţia întregului areal urbanizat
depăşeşte 40 mil. locuitori, remarcându-se totuşi zone cu densităţi foarte
ridicate în alternanţă cu altele mai scăzute.
În dezvoltarea reţelei de aşezări a viitorului megalopolis se disting câteva
perioade caracteristice:
1. Prima perioadă , desfăşurată până în anul 1720, relevă o limitare strictă a
aşezărilor la litoral. Orientarea predominantă a acestora a fost deci către
mare, dezvoltându-se o serie de porturi ca: Boston, Philadelphia,
Nantucket, Newport, New London şi New Haven. Cel mai important oraş
al coloniilor a fost, în această perioadă, Boston.
2. A doua perioadă (până în anul 1783) se caracterizează printr-o
intensificare a numărului de imigranţi, care ocupă spaţiul din Great
Valley, valea fluviului Hudson şi coridorul Mohawk. Boston-ul împarte
acum rolul de conducător al coloniilor cu oraşul Philadelphia.
3. În perioada 1783-1815 continuă expansiunea comerţului maritim şi
dezvoltarea aşezărilor spre interior. Se dezvoltă oraşul Baltimore ca port
şi se întemeiază oraşul Washington. New York preia supremaţia în
competiţia cu oraşele Philadelphia şi Boston.

3. 4. După anul 1815 , până în preajma anilor 1860, continuă dezvoltarea
centrelor secundare. Aceasta este şi era construcţiei canalelor (Syracuse,
Binghamton) şi a căilor ferate (Harrisburg, Altoona) ceea ce asigură
legături facile între interiorul continentului nord-american şi litoralul
atlantic.
5. În perioada 1860-1940 se accelerează dezvoltarea aşezărilor urbane,
alături de activitatea portuară un rol tot mai crescând revenind
activităţilor industriale. Modificări substanţiale au loc în peisajul urban,
prin apariţia construcţiilor uriaşe structurarea originală a spaţiului,
dezvoltarea reţelei de comunicaţii intraurbane.
6. Perioada de după 1940 , considerată ca era urbanizării, se distinge, în
general, prin puternice mişcări de populaţie în regiunile metropolitane.
Zonele suburbane şi oraşele –satelit din jurul marilor oraşe cunosc o
dezvoltare foarte accentuată, prin stabilirea populaţiei imigrante şi prin
stabilirea în ariile periferice a populaţiei din zonele centrale ale
oraşelor.
Sub raport demografic remarcăm existenţa în cadrul megalopolisului a
cinci oraşe bimilionare, între care se dezvoltă alte 21 de oraşe cu o populaţie
mai mare de 100.000 locuitori şi care realizează treceri neobservabile într e
centrele primare.
Activităţile industriale ocupă în ansamblu megalopolisului un rol
important, plasându-l pe locul I în S.U.A. şi pe locul II în lume, după
megalopolisul americano-canadian al Marilor Lacuri. Sunt dezvoltate in mod
deosebit industriile uşoare: confecţiilor, pielăriei şi încălţămintei, textilă şi
tricotajelor, iar dintre ramurile industriei alimentare: a tutunului, a produselor
zaharoase, conservelor de peste şi de carne etc. Industria grea este reprezentată
de ramurile: siderurgie, electrotehnică şi electronică, material rulant şi rutier,
maşini unelte şi chimie.
Necesităţile energetice ale megalopolisului sunt acoperite prin aportul
unor mari termocentrale: Boston, New York, Philadelphia şi centrale
atomoelectrice: Indian Point şi New Haven.
Boswash-ul este conectat la un întreg sistem de conducte de gaze
(,,Transco” şi ,,Big Inch”) şi petrol (din zona Golfului Mexic), prin care i se
asigură necesarul energetic şi de materii prime pentru industria petrochimică.

4. Agricultura acestei mari concentrări urbane este specializată pentru piaţă,
în câmpiile de coastă, obţinându-se produse perisabile destinate direct
consumului. Deşi condiţiile pedoclimatice sunt în general puţin favorabile
(soluri nisipoase, frecvenţa huricanelor tropicale şi a furtunilor de coastă),
apropierea pieţei asigură o rentabilitate sporită a investiţiilor făcute pentru
fertilizare, irigare şi protejare a culturilor.
Analiza de detaliu a agriculturii de piaţă, caracteristică marii concentrări
urbane, relevă specializarea fermelor în patru activităţi: horticultură, creşterea
păsărilor, creşterea vacilor de lapte şi legumicultura. Aproape toate oraşele
mari ale megalopolisului nord-est american sunt imense complexe industriale
de origine portuară. Această activitate de transport maritim cunoaşte
intensificări deosebite, existând 7 porturi cu un trafic de peste 20 mil. tone
(New York-peste 300 mil. tone, Philadelphia-60 mil. tone, Baltimore-50 mil.
tone, Boston-30 mil. tone).

5. Megalopolisul din nord-estul S.U.A. poate fi împărţit în 4 sectoare: sudul
Noii Anglii, New York, valea Delaware şi conurbaţia Baltimore-
Washington.
o În sudul Noii Anglii, rolul cel mai important revine arealului
urbanizat al Bostonului, axa continuându-se spre vest prin
racordarea oraşelor Worcester şi Springfield, a celor de pe valea
Connecticut (prin Hartford), New Haven şi Bridgeport până la
limita cu arealul metropolitan al New York-ului.
Arealul marelui Boston însumează o populaţie de peste 3,55 mil. locuitori
concentrată într-o zonă centrală, dar şi într-o serie de oraşe satelit dispuse sub
formă de semicercuri în jurul oraşului propriu- zis. Primul, în imediată
apropiere a Bostonului include oraşe industriale: Cambridge, Sommerville şi
Watertown, al doilea oraşele: Lynn, Salem, Waltham şi Quinsy, al treilea:
Haverhill, Lawrence, Lowl, iar al patrulea semicerc este alcătuit din:
Fitenburg, Worchester, Woonsocket şi Providence.
Legăturile dintre aceste oraşe şi centru se fac printr-o reţea radiară de căi
ferate şi şosele ce pornesc din oraşul propriu-zis.
o Arealul metropolitan al oraşului New York este unul dintre cele mai
complexe din S.U.A., având o populaţie ce depăşeşte 16,6 mil.
locuitori (la nivelul anului 1983), din care circa 7,9 mil. revin
oraşului propriu-zis dezvoltarea oraşului New York s-a datorat în
special avantajelor naturale ale plasării portului, poziţiei favorabile
în raport cu căile maritime şi hinterland 1 -ului său continental.
Arealul oraşului New York corespunde cu o zonă puternic remaniată
de glaciaţia cuaternară, fluviul Hudson însuşi fiind un mare canion
glacial pe 240 km. până în portul Troy. Oraşul New York este cel
mai important centru industrial al S.U.A. posedând circa 1/8 din
totalul marilor întreprinderi ale ţării. În ceea ce priveşte repartiţia
populaţiei în arealul metropolitan se constată că circa o jumătate
aparţine oraşului New York cu cele 5 cartiere ale sale:
(Brooklyn-2,6 mil. locuitori, Queens-2,0 mil. locuitori, Bronx şi
Manhattan-câte 1,5mil. locuitori şi Richmond-0,3 mil. locuitori),
restul revenind oraşelor satelit. Densitatea cea mai mare se constată
în Manhattan (depăşind 30.000 loc/km 2 ), cartier spre care se
deplasează zilnic circa 3 mil. persoane din celelalte zone ale
oraşului.

6. Oraşul New York este cel mai important centru al lumii contemporane
prin intensitatea legăturilor comerciale, financiare, bancare şi diplomatice.
o Valea Delaware formează o subunitate în cadrul Boswash-ului ,
întinzându-se de la sud de Trenton până la sud de Philadelphia şi
Washington. Oraşul Philadelphia împreună cu suburbiile, însumează
circa 5,6 mil. locuitori, fiind a patra concentrare urbană din S.U.A.
şi este aşezat la confluenţa râurilor Delaware şi Schwykill. La nord
şi vest Pfiladelphia este înconjurat de oraşe mici: Easton,
Bethlehem, Allentown, Lancaster.
o Conurbaţia Baltimore – Washington, reprezintă partea cea mai
sudică a megalopolisului nord-est american, cu o populaţie de peste
6 mil locuitori. Teritoriul conurbaţiei aparţine statelor Mariland şi
Virginia şi Distictului Columbia, guvernat de comitetul
Congresului. Nucleele de bază ale concentrării urbane sunt oraşele
Baltimore şi Washington. Oraşul Baltimore este localizat la capătul
navigaţiei de pe râul Patapsco, la circa 18 km de golful Chesapeake,
dispunând de condiţii propice dezvoltării activităţii portuare.
Populaţia oraşului la nivelul anului 1983 depăşea 2,1 mil locuitori,
din care 20% o reprezenta populaţia de culoare. Baltimore este un
centru care s-a dezvoltat exclusiv pe produse importate.
Oraşul Washington este localizat pe râul Potomac, înainte de vărsarea acestuia în
estuarul Chesapeake în zona de contact între munţii Apalaşi, care se întind la
vest şi nord-vest, şi zona de câmpie nisipoasă din est şi sud-est. Washington a
devenit capitală SUA în anul 1800, cunoscând o dezvoltare continuă până în
preajma anilor 1950, când populaţia sa a început să scadă numeric. Din cei
peste 3 milioane locuitori, cât are cu suburbiile sale, circa 54% reprezintă
populaţia de culoare, Washington-ul fiind singurul oraş mare al SUA în care
populaţia de culoare este majoritară.
Din punct de vedere industrial, oraşul Washinghton este slab dezvoltat,
industria sa reprezentând numai 10% din producţia realizată în oraşul
Baltimore. Sunt remarcate doar industriile uşoară şi alimentară. Washington
reprezintă un centru pentru turism şi convenţii, pentru educaţie şi artă,
important centru bancar, mai ales de când a crescut rolul guvernului federal în
economia naţională.
În oraş există 2 aeroporturi internaţionale cu un trafic anual de circa 15
milioane pasageri.
Sub aspectul banistic este evidentă ponderea foarte mare a spaţiilor verzi

7. (revenind în medie 53m 2 /locuitor), a clădirilor cu 10-11 etaje în partea centrală
a oraşului şi a vilelor în zonelor limitrofe. În oraş se situează Capitoliul
(sediul congresului SUA), Casa Albă (reşedinţa preşedintelui), sediile
ministerelor şi ale reprezentanţelor sociale. Funcţia fundamentală a oraşului
rămâne cea politico-administrativă.
