Brief Comment
According to the data from the Ministry of Tourism in July 2013, showed that the number of
arrivals to Cambodia totalling 338.761 persons an increased by 12.39% -from 301.412 persons
compared to the last month’s. In the same time, the number of arrivals at the Phnom Penh
International Airport increased by 6.34%, -from 64.019 to 68.078 persons, the number of
arrivals at the Siem Reap International Airport appreciated by 22.65% from 62.433 to 76.571
persons, and the number of arrivals by land and boat went up by 10.95% from 174.960 to
190.235 persons.
In August 2013, according to the data from the Ministry of Planning reported that, inflation rate
was increased by 0.4% compare to the last month. Commodity prices on local markets
presented strongly price. Of which, food prices reportedly for example, the second rice quality
price increased by 0.41% -from 2.410 to 2.420 riels/kg, the Fresh Beef No.1 price jumped by
1.34%-from 33.700 to 34.150 riels/kg, the Pork with fat price rose by 0.66%-from 16.785 to
16.895 riels/kg, , the dressed chicken No.1 price went up by 0.72% from 21.390 to 21.545
riels/kg, and the mud fish (large) rose by 4.24% from 14.025 to 14.620 riels/kg. But, the
gasoline price decreased by 3.92% from 5.461 to 5.247 riels/litre, and diesel price rose by
1.92% from 5.200 to 5.100 riels/litre. Overall, the annual inflation rate year on year in August
2013 increased by 3.4%.
In August 2013, according to the report from World Bank website the most main commodity on
the international markets presented mixed price on average compared to the last month. For
example, the rubber price in Singapore rose by 0.23% -from 2.563 to 2.569 US$/ton, the log
price in Malaysia increased by 1.84% -from 298.8 to 304.3 US$/m3, the oil Brent price in
London, UK jumped by 3.06%, -from 107.7 to 111.0 US$/barrel, and the second sugar price in
London, UK went up by 1.08% -from 371 to 375 US$/ton. But, the red corn price in Chicago
declined by 14.6%-from 279.5 to 238.7 US$/ton, and the second quality rice price in Bangkok,
Thailand depreciated by 7.10% -from 457.5 to 425.0 US$/ton.
In August 2013, generally, the US dollar average price position continued to mixed price
against to the major currencies in the world markets compared to the last month. For example,
Korean won went up by 0.39% -from 1.113 to 1.109 won/dollar, and the Vietnamese dong rose
by 0.02% -from 21.099 to 21.094 dong/dollar. In the meantime, the Cambodian riel was remain
stable at 4.062 riels/dollar. But, the Japanese yen decreased by 0.12% –from 98.1 to 98.2
yen/dollar, Thai baht fell by 2.80% -from 31.2 to 32.1 baht/dollar, and the Euro values declined
by 0.25%-from 0.75 to 0.76 Euro/dollar.

In August 2013, according to the data from National Bank of Cambodia revealed that the total
liquidity 29.139 billion riels, decreased by 3.88% -from 30.316 billion riels, compared to the
last month. In the meantime, the foreign currency deposit fell by 4.87% -from 24.821 to 23.613
billion riels and the currency outside banks went down by 2.42% -from 4.335 to 4.230 billion
riels. But, this was contributed mainly to the domestic credit (stock) increased by 0.13% -from
23.046 to 23.076 billion riels, and the credit to the private enterprises appreciated by 0.09% from 25.924 to 25.946 billion riels. Net official reserve including gold in August 2013 could
sustain more than 7.6 months of retained imports of goods and services.
According to the data from the General Customs and Excise Department showed in August
2013, the total value of import increased by 1.54%-from 1,163.4 to 1,181.4 billion riels,
compared to the last month. Of which, the import Construction equipment increased by 10.51%
-from 21.6 to 23.9 billion riels, the import of food and Ingredients went up by 8.68% -from 30.2
to 32.8 billion riels, the import of medicine appreciated by 2.34% -from 38.8 to 39.7 billion
riels, and the import of the petroleum increased by 8.03% -from 318.3 to 343.9 billion riels.
But, the import of steel fell by 12.72% -from 21.4 to 18.7 billion riels the import of the vehicle,
motorbikes and spare part decreased by 18.70% -from 188.9 to 153.6 billion riels.
In August 2013, total value of export amount 756.3 million dollar, an increased by 22.59% from 616.8 million dollars, compared to the last month. Of which, the export of clothing
increased by 26.57% -from 453.1 to 573.5 million dollars, the export shoes raised by 1.21% from 32.6 to 33.0 million dollars, the export of other textile products went up by 15.30% -from
7.2 to 8.4 million dollars, the export rice appreciated by 18.11% -from 17.2 to 20.3 million
dollars, the export rubber went up by 20.49% -from 15.6 to 18.8 million dollars, and the export
of fishing products rose by 1.17% -from 0.071 to 0.072 million dollars.
In July 2013, the Domestic Revenue reflected 568.4 billion riels, a decrease by 10.66%
compared to last month, totalling 636.2 billion riels. Of which, current revenue decreased by
10.66%, -from 636.2 to 568.4 billion riels, and the tax revenue fell by12.76% -from 606.9 to
529.5 billion riels. But, the non-tax revenue appreciated by 33.14% -from 29.2 to 38.9 billion
riels. At the same time, the current expenditure accounted for 706.2 billion riels, representing an
increase of 54.77% against 456.3 billion riels, compared to last month. Overall, current budget
balance in 7 months in 2013, posted a noticeable surplus of 1,593.3 billion riels.
