Taking someone else’s
information or original
thoughts and putting it
in your own words.
First, you MUST:
• Read the quote.
• Understand the quote.
• Then, put the quote in your own
words.
Direct Quote/Original Text:
“During Nasser’s presidency, Egypt’s economy was
highly centralized and extremely regulated. Since
Nasser’s death in 1970, the economy has become
more open and the government has launched
various reform programs aimed at attracting
foreign investment and encouraging growth”
(Egypt).
3. Paraphrasing
When you have text
that you need to
paraphrase, consider
these tips:
Reread the original passage until you understand its
full meaning.
Change the sentence structure.
Use key words from the original. While you need to
paraphrase in your words, you cannot, and need not,
substitute a different word for every word in the
original.
Attribute the author and the page number directly
after the paraphrased text.
