Gold rises for second day on USD w eakness and rising demand from India.
Gold extended gains on Friday as the dollar fell against the yen after a report suggested
that U.S. President Donald Trump would next take up trade issues with Japan, while
investors feared a new round of Sino-U.S. tariffs could come at any moment. The dollar
declined further against the yen following a CNBC television report on Thursday that Trump
told a Wall Street Journal columnist he might take on trade issues with Japan. Another big
worry for investors was the end of a public consultation period over trade, after which
Trump could impose tariffs on $200 billion more in Chinese imports. commerce ministry
warned that the country would retaliate against any new tariff measures. markets will be
closely watching a U.S. employment report due later in the day for cues on the pace of
interest rate hikes by the Fed.
Demand in the current high season will provide some support to premiums
LME copper failed to extend its gains at the $5,988/mt level when it tested resistance at
$6,000/mt above. It will attempt to stand firm above $5,900/mt today. The yuan appreciated
and bolstered the SHFE 1811 contract to close 210 yuan/mt higher at 47,810 yuan/mt.
However, concerns of China’s tough stance on trade disputes with the US continue to weigh
on investors and the market. High spot premiums are unlikely to sustain with the opening of
the import window. Demand in the current high season will provide some support to
premiums, which are expected at 60-110 yuan/mt today.
The US dollar weakened, longs entered the market cautiously on
concerns over potential US tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese
goods.
LME nickel failed to break pressure at the five-day moving average, and closed at
$12,470/mt overnight. Inventory across LME warehouses shrank 324 mt to 236,706 mt. The
SHFE 1811 contract also traded weakly with resistance above at 103,500 yuan/mt. Although
the US dollar weakened, longs entered the market cautiously on concerns over potential US
tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. Today, LME nickel is expected to trade around
$12,500/mt with the SHFE contract at 102,000-103,500 yuan/mt. Spot prices are likely seen
at 102,500-108,500 yuan/mt.
Oil prices fall on emerging market woes, looming tariff deadline.
Oil prices were stable on Friday, as the market balanced a fall in U.S. crude inventories to
the lowest levels since 2015, with Sino-American trade tensions and economic weakness
from emerging markets. U.S. commercial crude oil inventories fell by 4.3 million barrels to
401.49 million barrels C-STK-T-EIA in the week to Aug. 31, the lowest since February 2015,
U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) data showed on Thursday. that, analysts said
prices were curbed by a rise in refined product stocks and a relatively weak U.S. peak fuel
consumption season this summer. Asian shares slipped to a 14-month trough on Friday as
investors feared a new round of Sino-U.S. tariffs, while currencies from Indonesia to India
also remained under pressure. the supply side, U.S. crude oil production C-OUT-T-EIA last

2. week remained at a record 11 million barrels per day (bpd), a level it has largely been at
since July.
