McKinley Park Sacramento Rebuild

The community was determined to rebuild the play structure at McKinley Park in East Sacramento after it was destroyed by arson on July 28, 2012. This was day five of the incredible effort. The rebuild represents the contributions of hundreds of volunteers giving hundreds of hours, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of dollars the community donated. This was the park on rebuilding day five on June 7, 2013.

Ana and José Murillo are siblings from Siquirres, Costa Rica who attend Monteverde School and love nature. They help their parents take care of the environment at home. However, they were accustomed to seeing rivers filled with garbage near their house. During a vacation to Cahuita beach, they enjoyed the sea but were inspired to do something to preserve water resources after some of their friends got sick from contaminated wells. Ana and José started picking up garbage, convincing their parents to use biodegradable products, and trying to change their community to value clean water. They hope that if everyone makes small changes, it can make a big difference.

When modernizing systems the software is migrated from one platform to another. There are big risks concerning the performance the system should have in the new platform. A new system cannot take more time to perform the same operations than the previous one as the users will refuse it. Therefore, the preventive performance test is crucial to guarantee the success of the modernization project. However, the automation tasks for performance testing are too demanding, in terms of time and effort, as the tools work at a communication protocol level. Though not free, the functional testing automation is easier to accomplish than the performance testing automation as the tools work at a graphic user interface level; the tools are therefore more intuitive and they have to handle less variables and technical issues. In this article we present a tool that we developed for industrial usage to automatically generate performance tests scripts from automated functional tests. The tool has been used in several projects in the industry, achieving important effort savings and improving flexibility.

Marcos de trabajo ágiles como Scrum se han convertido en algo que va más allá de la gestión de proyectos, re-definiendo nuestra concepción del trabajo, apuntando al trabajo en equipo y sus interacciones, por encima de roles especialistas.
¿Esto quiere decir que debamos prescindir de roles más específicos como el Tester?. No, por el contrario, nuestra charla intentará reflexionar a partir de nuestra experiencia empírica sobre el cambio de paradigma. De esta manera, buscamos ampliar la concepción de Tester enfocado únicamente al Diseño o Ejecución de Casos de Prueba, en pos de personas más “full stack”, debiendo incorporar nuevas formas de testear software como el Testing Exploratorio, y elementos de Gestión claves para generar entornos de confianza y colaboración, que nos permitan entregar productos de mejor calidad en un “time to market” adecuado a nuestros clientes.

ENASE 2013 - SEM - (Francia) From Functional Test Scripts to Performance Test...
When modernizing systems the software is migrated from one platform to another. There are big risks concerning the performance the system should have in the new platform. A new system cannot take more time to perform the same operations than the previous one as the users will refuse it. Therefore, the preventive performance test is crucial to guarantee the success of the modernization project. However, the automation tasks for performance testing are too demanding, in terms of time and effort, as the tools work at a communication protocol level. Though not free, the functional testing automation is easier to accomplish than the performance testing automation as the tools work at a graphic user interface level; the tools are therefore more intuitive and they have to handle less variables and technical issues. In this article we present a tool that we developed for industrial usage to automatically generate performance tests scripts from automated functional tests. The tool has been used in several projects in the industry, achieving important effort savings and improving flexibility.

¿El rol del tester está destinado a morir a causa del Agilismo?
Si seguimos haciendo las mismas cosas que hace 20 años atrás, probablemente sí. Marcos de trabajo ágiles como Scrum se han convertido en algo que va más allá de la gestión de proyectos, re-definiendo nuestra concepción del trabajo, apuntando al trabajo en equipo y sus interacciones, por encima de roles especialistas.
¿Esto quiere decir que debamos prescindir de roles más específicos como el Tester?. No, por el contrario, nuestra charla intentará reflexionar a partir de nuestra experiencia empírica sobre el cambio de paradigma. De esta manera, buscamos ampliar la concepción de Tester enfocado únicamente al Diseño o Ejecución de Casos de Prueba, en pos de personas más “full stack”, debiendo incorporar nuevas formas de testear software como el Testing Exploratorio, y elementos de Gestión claves para generar entornos de confianza y colaboración, que nos permitan entregar productos de mejor calidad en un “time to market” adecuado a nuestros clientes.

- 3. Yet the community was determined to rebuild the destroyed play structure. This was day five of the incredible effort to rebuild McKinley Park. This represents the contributions of hundreds of volunteers giving hundreds of hours, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of dollars the community donated. - 5. McKinley Park ~ A Work in Progress This was the park at sunset. I think the kids are going to love climbing on the big synthetic boulder. This park is going to be a dream come true!
- 6. I haven’t done much building in my day, but hundreds of moms and dads like me picked up tools to help with the rebuild. It really was like an old-fashioned community barn raising. Time to drill down… …Who cares if you’re an amateur?

- 9. A number of staging areas made the rebuild possible.
- 10. I can’t wait to watch the look on my daughter’s face when she sees this little train.
- 11. Time for a break high above. This will be a park like no other.
- 12. The finishing touches are being placed on the park. It is now complete. It will reopen to the public on June 27, 2013.
