We recently met with Carl Martinsen about the Calvary Church trip to Guatemala coming up Sept 9th-19th. He shared with us some of the ministries that we will be working with as well as a little about SETECA, the largest evangelical seminary in Central America

There are various study options: fulltime, night school and Saturday classes. In Guatemala most students work full time and study part time so the seminary has several schedules to meet the needs of the students. Carlos is a full time pastor and also studies at the seminary every Saturday. In order to get to class by 7:30 AM, he rides his bike about 3 miles every Friday afternoon to a friend’s house where he can leave his bike. Then he takes a bus to a town about an hour away where he can spend the night and catch a bus to Guatemala City at 4:30 AM. Another student travels each weekend several hours on a bus from Tapachula, Mexico.
In addition to a music major program, private lessons in a variety of musical instruments and voice are also available to the church community.
On Wednesday mornings about 165 women come to study a Bible lesson that they will teach to others during the week. There are now extensions of this program in Honduras, El Salvador, and Los Angeles, California. The material for this program is written by Latin American authors, and it is printed inexpensively in Guatemala.
The mothers did not come alone! They brought small children with them who couldn’t be left home alone so the Little Soldiers Club was started for boys and girls ages 3-6. About 30 of them gather each week to have a good time together.
The vision and goals of the seminary remain the same as they have been for the last 75 years.
