5. The next mornings beach walk north to Sugar Beach required detouring to the street to
get around some large properties. The Captain Vancouver Monument was a highlight.
6. Afternoon drive to Kepaniwai Heritage Garden, Iao Valley. Celebrates immigrants:
Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Africa-American, Portuguese and yes New England,
missionaries. Beautiful Mountains!
8. Stopped by the Kanaha
Wildlife Sanctuary on the
way back to Kihei. We only
saw 2 birds, but they were
interesting we guessed one was a
Black-Necked Hawaiin Stilt
9. The next morning, we got an early start (for us) to barely find a parking spot at the Ahihi-Kinua Natural
Preserve. The Preserve is at the end of a very rough road. The trail is mostly over loose, sharp basalt. The
gusts of wind were so strong I thought they would blow me over onto the rocks. We lost our way to the
ancient Hoapili Trail (Kings Highway) which once circled Maui. We found the trail on our way out, but it didn’t
look any better than the trail we had taken to La Perouse Bay viewpoint.
12. On the way back to Kihei we
stopped at Makena State Park for
me to swim. It took about 20
minutes to figure out how to pay
for parking & then we input the
wrong license plate #.
High winds and HUGE Waves which
splashed over my head when I was
wading. The lifeguard announced a
wind warning. Hold on to your
beach umbrellas!
Lots of sand
