Law and is open to University of Miami students, faculty, staff, and the public. The conference will feature lectures on legal topics
specifically related to today’s ever-changing music industry, presented by distinguished legal practitioners of the music and
entertainment business.
The Southeast Sound: Music Law Conference will feature lectures on some of the most current and controversial legal topics in music
and entertainment law. The discussed topics will range from legal issues of the live music industry to the upset over royalties owed to
songwriters and artists from streaming radio services. The conference is to take place in room F109 at the University of Miami School
of Law. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Five renowned legal practitioners of the music and entertainment business have been invited to share valuable insight on these issues.
The first guest speaker, Chrissie Scelsi, is an entertainment and intellectual property attorney who will be sharing on the legal issues
surrounding music festivals and how to best advise music festival clients. Ivan Parron of Parron Law will give the second lecture.
Mr. Parron will discuss the different types of business arrangements that the modern music producer engages in today’s music
industry. David Bercuson, perhaps the most distinguished entertainment attorney in Florida, will walk the attendees through an
overview of what the “360 deal” consists of and what its negotiated compromises entail for the artist and company alike. Then,
Copyright Officer Stephen Carlisle will share on myths that have confused the truth about what copyright means for creators and
consumers of music content today. The keynote speaker, a Washington D.C. based entertainment attorney, John Simson, will provide
attendees with the answers to many of the questions on the issues at stake in regards to music streaming and how these issues are
affecting the music industry economy today.
