Lilly Ledbetter filed a pay discrimination lawsuit against Goodyear Tire after discovering through an anonymous note that she was paid less than male employees doing the same job. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Goodyear, finding Ledbetter had not filed her claim within the 180-day statute of limitations. However, Justice Ginsburg dissented, arguing the limitations period was too short given pay discrimination often occurs in small increments over time. In response, Democrats passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2007 to reset the statute of limitations with each new paycheck affected by discrimination.
