Charles Chaplin was a legendary British comic actor and filmmaker of the silent era. His screen character "The Tramp" became a global phenomenon in the early 20th century. Though his childhood was marked by poverty, he found success in the US and co-founded United Artists. However, his popularity declined in the 1940s due to controversies, and he was eventually forced to leave the US for Switzerland. Chaplin was a perfectionist who wrote, directed, produced, scored and starred in most of his films, which often contained social and political themes. He had a career in entertainment that spanned over 75 years.
