The Shpack Landfill is located 40 miles southwest of Boston in Massachusetts. It began operating as a private landfill in the 1960s and received both industrial and domestic waste. In the late 1970s, elevated radiation was detected at the site. The landfill contains contaminated waste from a former nuclear plant. Cleanup of the site was transferred to the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1997, though remediation is not yet complete so any long-term stewardship requirements are still unknown.
