Maryland is one of the original 13 colonies located on the east coast. It has a diverse geography including the Chesapeake Bay and Appalachian Mountains. The state has a rich colonial history and was founded in 1632 by Lord Baltimore as a refuge for Catholics facing religious persecution in England. Today, Maryland has a population of over 6 million people and its largest city, Baltimore, is a major port city known for blue crabs and the Baltimore Ravens football team.

history. In the following slides I will
be presenting information and other
interesting facts about this state.

Atlantic region of the east coast of
the United states, from above it
borders with Pennsylvania and
located right below of it, is Virginia.
To its right is New Jersey and
Delaware, and to its West is West
Virginia. Maryland is located next to
the Atlantic ocean, and is therefore a
coastal state.

3. Economy
The economy of Maryland recruits 2.97 million
people today. Some of its major businesses are
agriculture, manufacturing, and fishing. The largest
industries in Maryland are construction, Elementary
and secondary schools, Restaurants and food
services. The median household income in
Maryland is $78,945. Males in Maryland have an
average income, $77,137 that is 1.29 times more
than a females average income, $59,816. People
make money by working,so they can live. Some
common jobs are fishing, since Maryland is located
near a coast.

4. Weather
Maryland has two different climates. In the west
it has temperature records from -40 F (-40 C) to
more than 100 F (38 C). Average temperatures in
the west are 65 F (18 C) in the summer and 28 F
(-2 C) in the winter. The east has a humid
subtropical climate, relatively high temperatures
and evenly distributed precipitation throughout
the year. Average temperatures in eastern
Maryland are 75 F(24 C) in the summer, and 35
F(2 C) in winter. Precipitation levels are constant
enough to supply Maryland with water in
reservoirs and other uses.

5. Geography
Although Maryland is small, it has diverse
landforms. The eastern half of Maryland
contains the Chesapeake Bay, and the
surrounding estuaries and coastal plains. The
western side however has lots of mountains.
Maryland is sometimes called,“America in
miniature,” because it is just a tiny state, but it
has such diverse physical features, such as
plateaus, coastal plains, and mountains.
Maryland has an area of 12,407 mi square.
Also the soil in Maryland is diverse some
places have very good soil, rich in nutrients
and good for farming, while others are hard,
dry, clay-like and, not as good.

6. Religion
At first, Maryland was originally with Catholics
when founded, established by Lord Baltimore who
tried to make it a Catholic Colony, but failed to do
so. Other religions came and left Maryland. Today
statistics show about 69% are christians, 8%
non-christians, and 23% un-religious. Religions
practiced include Christianity, Catholicism,
Bhuhdistism, Hinduism, Islam, and much more. You
have a freedom of religion in Maryland, but their are
a few incidents where people treated muslims
badly. Some religious rituals in Maryland is going to
the church for christians or muslims going to the
mosque.

7. Who founded Maryland? Why?
The territory was named Maryland in honor of
Henrietta Maria, the queen and wife of Charles
the first. Before the actual settlement in
Maryland, George Calvert died, so it was
handed to his son to Cecilius Calvert, who
established Maryland, a refuge for Catholics
that faced religious persecution back in
England. Basically Cecilius founded Maryland
as a settlement, and the reason was for refuge
from religious persecution.

Where are majority colonists from? Why did
they settle in Maryland?
Almost all colonists were English. Majority of
colonists were Catholics that wanted freedom from
religious persecution. Also their were a good handful
of Protestants. They settled in Maryland for a better
life, and to escape persecution. Also at the time land
grants were given to attract more settlers.

8. Social Life for Colonists
Colonists worked hard long boring tedious
hours, but they didn’t just work, they also
had fun! Men had horse races and went to
taverns. Women had quilting bees, and the
children would play with tops and have
races. After long hours of work families,
friends, and neighbors would get together
at homes and they’d talk, play games, and
have all sorts of fun.

9. Major Cities and Destinations
There are many major cities one major city is Baltimore. It
has rich and long history as an important seaport. Most of
the people live in Baltimore, around 622,271 making it
very crowded. This city offers lots of rides, beaches and
yummy foods, especially crab and other types of seafood.
Next Annapolis, Maryland’s capital also offers a lot of
history, museums, and delicious foods. It has a population
of about 39,321.

● The first school in the United States was in Maryland.
● The lady who saved lives, Harriet Tubman, was born in Maryland.
