Editor's Notes

  1. Jesus burst onto the scene of human history in Mark 1:15 announcing that something had really changed in the universe at a cosmic level … the Kingdom of God was now at hand! (Something big had really changed.) The consequence of that for human beings who had been rebelling all their lives against His Kingly rule and authority by choosing to live as their own boss was that they would now need to turn away from their rebellion and its expression in their sinful choices in life and put their trust and confidence in Christ to sort it all out for them and restore their relationship to the God their rebellion had affronted but Who was now coming. That turning from sin and trusting in Christ would find expression in following Jesus which would make them (like Him) into fishers of men. And immediately that is resolved, Jesus forgives the sins of a crippled man let down through the roof of the place He was preaching in (which was something God alone could do), and proved He had authority to do this by having the man whose sin He’d forgiven pick up his mat and walk home. This Jesus Who announced the coming of the Kingdom then spends the whole account up to 8:29 showing the disciples that He (the One Who announced the Kingdom had come) was in fact Himself the King Who had come, recognised finally in 8:29 as Peter confesses, ‘You are the Christ’. Immediately the point changes from ‘Jesus is God the Son coming and establishing His Kingdom as Messiah’ to ‘Jesus is the rejected, suffering crucified (and resurrected) Messiah … and THIS is what it means for you to follow a Messiah like that! Last time we were shown the implications of following a rejected Messiah for the follower’s view of Status. This time we see how following such a rejected and suffering Messiah impacts the disciple’s take on materialism, in terms of stepping away from its costly grip.
  2. A man runs up and sets himself between the Lord Jesus and the Lord’s clear intention to move on from that place … The man has a well thought out question … [READ] This is a very revealing question from the outset. It tells us a lot about this man’s inadequate and erroneous view of Jesus and of how salvation is gained or rather ‘earned’. Three key elements emerge …
  3. Now, if you don’t stop and think about it, this greeting of Jesus and calling Him Good and Teacher … sounds like a very positive opening indeed. Powerful young Jewish guy. Rich. Hailing Jesus and asking for spiritual help. Appears to be signing up for Jesus’s teaching. But is it helpful to think of Jesus as just ‘Good Teacher? We have this expression: ‘to damn with faint praise’ … do you know the one I mean? Wikipedia: “Damning with faint praise is an English idiom for words that effectively condemn by seeming to offer praise which is too moderate or marginal to be considered praise at all.[1]In other words, this phrase identifies the act of expressing a compliment so feeble that it amounts to no compliment at all, or even implies a kind of condemnation” To call Jesus a teacher, or a prophet, or a ‘good man’ is actually to do Him down considerably. Jesus’s clear claim for the last nine chapters has been a claim to deity as He has set about demonstrating that He alone can do things that God alone can do. If you are going to acknowledge that Jesus is a Good Teacher you need to acknowledge what it is that He has been teaching, and what He has been teaching is that He is the Son of Man from Daniel 7, that He is God come in the flesh inaugurating the Kingdom of God and acting like God come back to earth to reign, fulfilling the signs of the Messiah described in centuries of OT prophecy … the deaf hear, the lame walk, the blind see … and Good News is preached to the poor! It’s just like the prophets had said it would be, but they said the One Who did thee tings would be God coming into His Kingdom, not some ever so inspired, ever so good TEACHER. God is abused by such presumption – which as we will see in a minute is clearly seen and felt by Jesus …
  4. Not only does this man have an inadequate Christology, he also has a lamentably poor soteriology. He is clearly thinking in terms of self made righteousness and self made salvation. The Lord sees that and sees right through it as the stuff He says next about the commandments reveals. The man himself doesn’t deny this is exactly how he is thinking … he reckons he is still good enough to be the architect and author of his own salvation. The extent of this man’s self righteousness is about to emerge …
  5. OK Here is his target. To some extent he seems to be spot on … There IS eternal life, and you have to get hold of it. But this is nothing much more sophisticated here in this understanding of salvation than the one armed bandit at the end of the pier. He is in this for what he can get from it … not to be taken up with Jesus and a passion for following the Son of Man, the rejected, suffering, crucified, resurrected Messiah. The guy has utterly short circuited salvation … but salvation arises from a rapt relationship with the Saviour, being so taken with Him that you follow Him, your hero, your model … the one you desperately want to be not only LIKE, but WITH. He wants eternal life, but does He want its giver? Now, to most of us, this young man who came to Jesus seems like exactly te sort of person you want in your church … but Jesus is going to turn him away.
  6. Did you notice there which Commandments we were talking about? Count them … I make it six. Not ten. Why? In fact, not only are we short on numbers here, but we are also short of Someone … Who would that be? Jesus has left out the FIRST tablet of the Law. Obligation to fellow men is included here, but there is NOTHING said of a human being’s obligation to his God. Why? Because the ultimate offence to God has already been devastatingly seriously delivered, to damn with faint praise the King Who was coming in His Kingdom …’Good Teacher’, my eye! Jesus takes as read that this man has NOT fulfilled His responsibility to God under the Law, but is clearly oblivious to that, so Jesus checks out were the man thinks he is in relation to mankind, his fellow man.
  7. That ‘teacher’ thing is really getting rubbed in here, wouldn’t you say?! And then there’s the protestation that as a bar-mitzvah this guy has kept all the Commandments of God. Judaism regarded the age of thirteen as the age when a man would have become responsible to live by God’s commands. Do you believe him? I have to say, with reluctance, I do not!
  8. Perhaps the most astonishing thing here is the sort of people Jesus is prepared to put up with … more than put up with. Jesus loves self righteous, God-dishonouring materialists who are only interested in Him for what they can get out of Him. Let’s demonstrate. This man that Jesus looked at and loved … apparently such a good prospective convert, young and keen and with loads of money … what was he like beneath the surface AT HEART?
  9. Jesus has the measure of the man … he is addicted to his personal wealth. ‘One thing you lack,’ he said.  ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. See? Jesus is actually calling for him to put his FAITH in God rather than in his material possessions by taking his monetary comfort blanket and investing it not in his personal security here and now, but in Heaven. How, in this current economic climate of long running 0% interest etc., do you invest were it will last for ever? You invest it in Heaven by giving it to the poor! Is Jesus asking this young man to earn Heaven by his good works? He is NOT! He is challenging this young man to take that in which he relied and instead of hanging onto that, to put his trust in the one true living God to take care of everything for him. Jesus challenged him to loosen his grip on his false security blanket in order to lay hold of God trustingly. How does that go? We will see!
  10. Here it is. It is the long standing call of the Kingdom in Mark’s Gospel – repent, believe the Gospel, follow Jesus. His way, not mine. His lifestyle, not mine. His knowledge, wisdom and understanding, not mine. I idolise none of these things that are ‘mine’, I don’t cling to them just as He did not cling t anything that was reviously His, but I follow He Who though He was rich, yet He became poor, so that I … we … through His poverty might become rich. I follow Him.
  11. The man is utterly disappointed with Jesus. The man is utterly saddened by the way Jesus speaks to him. The man goes away. Jesus lets him. More than that, though. It was Jesus Who PUSHED him away. If you are not coming on the right basis you are not coming to Jesus. If you are coming on the basis of retaining your previous idolatries, you are not coming to Jesus. The call to Jesus is a call to the repentance that flows from faith, and what this man had only looked like faith, but wasn’t faith.
