Editor's Notes

  1. Total course length 215 minutes (about 3.5 hours not including breaks).Time: 2 minGreet the class.Introduce yourself and express excitement about being there.Suggest they refer to your bio in the back of the guide if they would like to learn more about you.Explain that we will begin the class by getting to know each other through a simple activity.
  2. Explain that everyone just finished doing a quick inventory of their preferred assets to use in making a living. Now we will consider the possibilities of what this livelihood can be.Remind everyone they need to continue considering the possibilities after this course because not all the answers can be found in this class. But, their new perspective may help them see opportunities they had not considered before.
  3. Time: 10 min (for next four slides).
  4. In a large firmone might specialize their accounting skills in many of these areas/departments. The same for the skills of project management, or managing people, or computer programming.Have learners refer to the example worksheet again to see if the can infer what departments might be of greatest interest to this individual.Explain at this point we have a pretty good idea about what this person is passionate about doing with their life for at least the next 10 years. The next step would be to develop an action plan that includesExplain that though this approach to thinking about job opportunities is helpful, it is still limited. Let’s consider
  5. Time:60 minInstructions provided to students:The objective of this activity is for you to discuss the possibilities for your future livelihood with peers. They will learn about your experiences, strengths, and preferences. They will provide ideas and suggest avenues you may have not fully considered before. During this time keep an open mind. Listen with your heart and your head. 1. In the triad each of you will have the chance to be a consultant (twice) and a client (once). Choose who will be the client first.2. When notified by the instructor, the client has 5 uninterrupted minutes to share their assets (material just completed) with the consultant. The consultants may take notes on the next page if they like.3. When notified again by the instructor, the consultants have 5 minutes to ask the clients questions, without giving any advice, in order to gain clarity of the situation.4. For the last 5 minute segment, consultants provide suggestions to the client about livelihood opportunities to pursue. The client should listen closely without dissention, but ask questions if needed.5. This entire process is repeated two more times so the other two members have a chance to be a client.Instructor note: Use a bell or chime as a signal. Wrap up the activity by asking a few people to share their insights gained from the experience. 
  6. Time: 2 minYou asked these questions earlier. Now ask for a show of hands to see how many people feel more confident about answering them (compare this to the response earlier).Explain they will have opportunity to answer the questions in just a few minutes…
  7. Time: 10 minThis slide is optional. Can tell the “guru” story with previous slide.Guru’s answer to the secret of success (this is a trimmed down version, embellish it when told):A young man visit a guru that he’s been told holds the secret to success. The guru says he will share the secret if the man meets him on the beach at 5 am the next morning.The man meets him at the beach at the right time. The guru tells him to get in the water. The man goes in up to his ankles.The guru says further. The exasperated man goes up to his knees. The guru says further. The frustrated man goes up to his waist. The guru says further. The man almost quits but then decides he came too far at this point to quit. The guru enters the water too to tell him the secret.The man goes up to his shoulders and suddenly the guru jumps on him and holds him under the water. The man is struggling and almost thinks he is lost when the guru releases him. Gasping for air he angrily asks the guru why did was he trying to drown him.The guru asks, under the water, what did you want the most? The man says, to breathe. The guru replies, the secret to success is you have to want it as much as you want to breathe.
