DRUGS
• Drugs are medicine or
other substances which
has physiological effects
when ingested or
otherwise introduced
into the body.
Drugs of Abuse
Drugs of Abuse – drug
that is taken for
nonmedicinal reasons.
Drug Abuse – this can lead
to physical and mental
damage. This also leads to
addiction.
Drug Dependent
Drug Dependent – a person who rely on medications to control
chronic medical conditions like, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.
Drug Tolerance
Drug Tolerance – simply means that a person’s reaction to a
drug decreases as they continue to use it.
CLASIFICATION OF DRUGS
1. Gateway Drugs are
habit-forming drugs
that a non drug user
might try while not
addictive, may lead to
more addictive drugs.
And there are 3
substances labeled as
Gateway Drugs.
1. Alcohol
2. Nicotine
3. Marijuana

2.Depressants.
Depressants are
also known as
“downer”, it
slows down a
person’s central
nervous system.
It relaxes
muscles and
nerves.

3. Stimulants- Stimulants are also
known as “uppers” or “speeders”, it
speeds up a person’s central nervous
system.
• Caffeine is a kind of stimulant which
can also be found in soft drinks,
energy drinks, coffee, tea, and
chocolate.
• Some illegal stimulants are Cocaine,
Nicotine and Shabu.

4. Narcotics.
• Narcotics is also
known as
“painkillers”, it
relieves pain and
induce sleepiness.
• Some illegal Narcotic
Drugs are Heroin, and
Marijuana, which if
taken wrong may
cause overdose
leading to coma and
even death.

5. Hallucinogen.
• Hallucinogens are also called “psychedelics”.
• Any natural or synthetic psychoactive drugs
that produce marked distortion of the senses
and changes in perception. Examples of
Hallucinogens are “Lysergic Acid
Diethylamide (LSD), Psilocybin, and
Mescaline.”

6. Inhalants- These are found in
ordinary household chemical products
which are huffed or sniffed.
• Continuous use and abuse lead to
delusion, brain damage, liver damage,
coma, and death.
Examples of household products used
as Inhalants are Acetone, Rugby, Spray
Paint, Cleaning Fluids, and Air
Conditioner Fluid (Freon).
