5. Michelangelo (1475 ā 1564)
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni
ā¢ Born on March 6, 1475
ā¢ His name means āArchangel Michaelā
ā¢ He was an Italian architect, engineer, painter, poet
and sculptor of the Renaissance
ā¢ He and Leonardo da Vinci were often called
āRenaissance manā which means a person having
great talent in many areas.
6. He went to Florence where the richest, most powerful family
was the Madici family who were supporter of arts.
They owned an academy which taught the
philosophy called Humanism
7. An important contract of Michelangelo was to
make a āPieta,ā a statue of Virgin Mary
mourning over the dead body of Jesus, her son.
This became the most famous Pieta ever made which
can be found in Saint Peterās Basilica
8. In 1499, Michelangelo was contracted to do the statue of
David . He carved it which took him three years to
complete. The āStatue of Davidā is one of his most
famous work during Renaissance period.
9. For almost four years (1508 -1512), Michelangelo painted the
ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
The chapel was long and wide with curved ceiling.
Twelve āpendentives,ā fan-shaped pieces of wall held up the
ceiling. He painted seven men prophets from the Old
Testament and five women prophets from the Classical worlds.
10. Michelangelo was called back by Pope Clement VII to
paint the wall behind the altar of the Sistine Chapel
with a huge scene of āThe Last Judgementā. He
worked on it from 1534- 1541
11. Michelangelo was buries in the
Basilica of Santa Croce (Church of the
Holy Cross) in Florence.
On his tomb sit three mourning
figures symbolizing architecture,
painting and sculpture.

16. Donatello (1386- 1466)
He was an early Italian sculptor from Florence during the
Renaissance, is partly noted for his work in bas-relief.
