The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is one of the most colorful activities of the
Lantern Festival. Pingxi is a remote hillside town. In the past, those who worked
or farmed in the mountains faced the risk of being robbed or killed, and they used
lanterns to inform their families they were safe. The lanterns do not function as
signals anymore, but are now used as symbols of peace and good fortune.

The night market is located near the former location of a wharf on the Keelung River. Agricultural
produce from farms in Shilin being shipped to other ports such as Banka and Dadaocheng would
typically be sold in this area. The daytime Shilin Market was formally established in this area in 1909,
and the market was inaugurated in 1913. With the influx of customers, many new businesses and
food vendors began to establish themselves in the area and the Shilin Night Market was born.
Shilin Night Market has since become the largest and most well known night market in Taiwan,
especially with regards to food, and is a favorite focal point for Taipei's night life among residents and
visitors alike.

At the time Japanese rule of Taiwan began in 1895, the Governor General of Taiwan set up temporary
headquarters at the former Qing Dynasty secretariat. The new rulers began making long terms plans for
development of the island. The plans soon included building a new headquarters for the Governor
General. Aspects of the design typical of Japanese architects in Taiwan's colonial period include a facade
facing east and a creative blend of traditional European elements. Construction began in June 1912 and
was completed in March 1919 at a cost of 2.8 million Japanese yen. During the Japanese Colonial period
in Taiwan, the building served as the office of Governor General of Taiwan During the Second World War,
the building suffered heavy bombing from the Allied Powers and was severely damaged. The building was
not repaired until 1947, the restoration involved approximately 81,000 workers and was completed at the
end of 1948, looking only slightly different from the original building.
