Mantle - Connected Lantern

Lantern
For anyone who has gazed upon the night sky,
traversed desolate mountain terrain, or sat in silence
to hear the wilderness come alive, there arises a
feeling which is hardly comparable to any other. When
we disconnect ourselves from the construct of our
man-made environments we enter a mindset and an
emotional state freed from restraint.
When we camp, we long for a uniquely natural
experience - one which releases our stress while
connecting us to the natural world and each other.
Unfortunately, our attempts are often compromised
by products and environments which have been
designed lacking consideration of their total effect.
They deliver on the promise of their obvious utility,
though do so in a way which negatively impacts our
user experience and even mental health.
MANTLE seeks to close this gap by delivering on the
need of lighting augmentation without interrupting
our connectedness to nature. In this way, we’re able
to illuminate our environment while ensuring our
access to the known health benefits associated with
exposure to the outdoors.[1]
1 Light is limited and unnaturally projected.
Different light sources produce light in varying color temperatures,
each affecting our mood in a unique way.

2. Blue Light Has a Dark Side, http://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/blue-light-has-
a-dark-side.
Exposure to blue light in the evening has been linked reduction in
melatonin production, equating to adverse health effects. [2]
3. User research was conducted to understand
user behavior, needs, and emotions.
During our field studies we observed the effect of cool light as
having a negative effect on mood and socialization.
Participants verbalized strong positive feelings in regards to
warm light introduction. The warm light sources appeared to
elevate mood, overall comfort, and sociability of the entire
group. Even with the temperature dropping to 44 F and no heat
source, the group stayed out conversing past 2:00 AM.
While participants seemed mostly undisturbed by the
temporary introduction of cool light sources, such as head
lamps and flashlights, they were surprised and clearly upset
when the overhead area light was unexpectedly switched to
a cool blue. When offered to put into “party mode” (color
changing fade) or switch to another color, there was nearly
unanimous objection among participants.
We were also able to experiment with light positioning and
fixturing, revealing ideal configurations for aiding visibility.
Another interesting discovery came about while interacting
with a group of stargazers we ran into at the campground, who
were using red light flashlights to limit loss of their eye’s rod
adaptation response to darkness.[1]
