ORIENTATION LEADERSHIP TEAM FALL 2016
Name: Manmeet Sital
Student Number: 100322274
Position: Orientation Leader
Orientation Seasons: Fall 2016
Hours contributed (approx.): 32.5
Overview
This letter is to recognize the contributions of Manmeet to the KPU Orientation Leadership Team. Orientation
Leaders prepare new students for a successful transition into post-secondary via full-day events during which
Leaders are responsible for their new student group from start to finish. The Orientation Student Leader Team
takes on a mentorship role for new students by orienting students to their campus, familiarizing them with KPU
resources, and sharing their tips and experiences. Orientation Leadership Team members are required to apply
for positions and participate in a full day leadership skills training workshop which includes public speaking and
group facilitation skills.
During Orientation, volunteers are required to have extensive campus knowledge and are expected to
encourage group interaction and participation. Given the nature of this large event, Orientation Leaders are
called upon to display a strong service attitude as well as the ability to solve problems creatively and
diplomatically.
Beyond the Orientation events, Orientation Leaders also provide peer-to-peer guidance and mentorship to
their assigned students throughout their first semester by regularly keeping in touch with them through their
chosen mediums.
Skills gained and developed from this event are:
 Problem solving
 Public speaking
 Time management, planning and
organization
 Mentorship
 Leadership
 Communication
 Working in a multicultural environment
 Teamwork and team building
 Social Media engagement
New Student Feedback
New Student Orientation events occur each semester, with over 1,650 new students who attended this Fall.
Many new students have commented on their student leaders’ input and advice as one of the most valuable
parts of their Orientation.
New Students were welcome to comment on their Student Leaders after Orientation. Below are some of the
comments from the new students about their Orientation Leaders:
 "Very kind and friendly, helpful. If he didn't know the answer, he would find it or guide to resources
of where to find answer. Very patient"
 "They were both awesome leaders!! They made orientation fun and interesting! I loved chatting
and joking around with them! I know if I ever need help with anything in university, I know I can go
to them for help!"
 "She was very accommodating. She made me feel comfortable and made herself available to
answer all of our questions big or small."
 "He seemed outgoing and was keen to share tips. I would feel comfortable contacting him again for
support."
 "I loved how our leaders were very real with us and gave us awesome advice!"
KPU Orientation & Transitions appreciates Manmeet’s contributions to the success of this program and we
know that our new students benefitted significantly from Manmeet’s leadership.
Sincerely,
