21. Culture Comparison
Having written down information about French dinning
experience, create a double bubble map on a new page. Label
the left bubble “American restaurants” and the right bubble
“French restaurants” Include information about dinning culture
and etiquette of both cultures. We will then create a graph
together as a class.
22. Restaurant comic strip
Now that you have explored French dinning and made some
comparisons between America and France, you will create a
comic strip of an American tourist going out to eat with their
French friend. Include some “faux pas” the American might make
and their friend’s corrections. The goal of the comic is to teach
your audience the basic of restaurant culture in France. You may
work alone or with a partner.
Editor's Notes
Most restaurants have outdoor and indoor seating. Eating outside is extremely popular as people like to order a café and spend an hour people watching or reading. Outside seating is usually self-seating while indoor seating can be either self-seating or seated by a host(ess) (maître d’).
Before watching the video have students create another column in their notebook labelled “French Restaurant Experience” Students should write notes from the video into that column
There’s a stereotype that French people, especially Parisians, are cold/rude. This, however, tends to be a misunderstanding due to language barriers and cultural differences. French people appreciate foreigners attempting to speak French and will often be warmer and more willing to help those who do. In France, always great the employee of any establishment by saying “Bonjour!” It is extremely rude not to, and sometimes an employee may comment on it.
Many English speakers make the mistake of saying Je suis fini when they are trying to say, “I am finished” This is because in English we used to be. However, when if you use etre in French you are saying you are finished ie You are dead. You can use avoir: J’ai fini (I have finished) or J’ai terminé.
Remind students to continue their notetaking in “French Restaurant Experience”
