Maharashtra is a state in the western region of India. It is the second
most populous state after Uttar Pradesh and third largest state by area
in India. Maharashtra is the wealthiest state in India, contributing 15%
of the country's industrial output and 13.3% of its GDP (2012–2013
figures).

STATE INCOME
Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) at constant prices, as per advance
estimates, is expected to grow at 7.1 per cent during 2013-14. The
Agriculture sector is expected to grow at (-) 1.4 per cent, restraining the
growth of ‘Agriculture & allied activities’ sector at (-) per cent. The
Industry sector is expected to grow at 7.0 per cent while, the Services
sector is expected to grow by 8.5 per cent.
ECONOMY
• The Service sector dominates economy of Maharashtra accounting
for 61.4% of the value addition and 69.3% of the value of the output in
country.
• In 2012, Maharashtra reported a revenue surplus of 1524.9 million
(US$24 million), with a total revenue of 1367117.0 million (US$22
billion) and a spending of 1365592.1 million (US$22 billion).
Maharashtra ranks 1st in FDI equity and percentage share of total FDI
inflows is 32.28%.
CONT.
•The state houses important financial institutions such as the Reserve
Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange , the National Stock
Exchange of India, the SEBI and the corporate headquarters of
numerous Indian companies and multinational corporations.
•As of 2012, there were 9,053 banking offices in the state, of which,
about 26 per cent were in rural and 54 per cent were in urban areas.
• Maharashtra ranks 1st in FDI equity and percentage share of total FDI
inflows is 32.28%. Total FDI inflows into Maharashtra are US$ 53.48
billion. Top countries that invested FDI equity in Maharashtra (from
January, 2000 to December, 2011) were Mauritius (39%) ,
Singapore(10%), United Kingdom (10%), U.S.A. (7%) and Netherlands
(5%).
POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT
• The Legislative Council is a permanent body of 78 members. The
government of Maharashtra is headed by the Chief Minister who is
chosen by the ruling party members of the Legislative Assembly. In the
2009 election, the largest number of seats went to the Indian National
Congress Nationalist Congress Party with 82 and 62 seats respectively.
• The people of Maharashtra also elect 48 members to the Lok Sabha,
the lower house of the Indian Parliament. The members of the state
Legislative Assembly elect 19 members to the Rajya Sabha, the upper
house of the Indian Parliament.
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
GoI published its first National Human Development Report
(NHDR) in 2001. Second in
the series viz. ‘India Human Development Report (IHDR) 2011’
has been published in 2011. IHDR advocates interventions in
human capital and expansion of human functioning in the
economic activities as key requirements for economic growth
and poverty reduction. Among major states, Kerala ranks first in
Human Development Index (HDI) followed by Punjab and
Maharashtra.
POVERTY
In 2012-13, the per capita income of Maharashtra at current prices
was Rs.26,291 ranking second to Haryana at Rs.26,632, which is
higher than Indian average of Rs.19,040 (GoM, 2004).
District wherein scheduled areas pertaining to tribal people exist are
Thane, Pune, Nashik, Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Ahmednagar,
Nanded, Amravati, Yavatmal, Gadchiroli and Chandrapur. Given the
scenario of relative prosperity in the state, the issue of widespread
tribal poverty cannot be dismissed (MSDR, 2005).
