One of the oldest and most popular myths was that
of Medusa.
Medusa held the first position among the creatures
that looked like a dragon and resembled humans
only in some characteristics.
They were monstrous creatures with extraordinary
power. They caused fear to humans and they could
be propitiated only through magic and not through
worship.
In the Greek mythology Medusa is referred as one
of the three Mermaids, the three sisters, Medusa
was the mortal one. Her second name was Gorgo
which means fierce look. Her image was really
terrifying for the ancient Greeks throughout
mythology but she hadn’t always been a monster.
Medusa used to be a very beautiful and attractive
woman and lots of men desired her. However, she
was a priestess in the temple of godess Athena and
like every priestess she was bound by the eternal
oath of chastity. According to the myth god
Poseidon was enchanted by her beauty and wanted
to mate with her.
Transformed into a horse, he had an intercourse
with her in the sacred area of Athena, which was an
act of sacrilege, an abominable act for the ancient
world.
Athena, infuriated by this event, could not quarrel
with Poseidon so she vented her wrath Medusa.
She turned her into a disgusting monster, which had
snakes instead of hair. Her ugliness was such that
whoever looked at her face turned into stone.
In the myth Medusa transformed into a kind of
monster called Gorgo, a detestable monster.
Medusa then became the absolute target for a lot of
warriors because whoever succeeded in
decapitating her, would gain an advantage in the
battlefield. The head which was cut off would still
have the power to turn people into stone.
Many men tried to achieve this goal but they did not
succeed, except one, Perseus.
