The Need for Speed in 4G and beyond
Mobile operators and wireless service providers alike are consistently under pressure to provide faster wireless data services, thanks to the proliferation of smart phones. The last decade has seen a phenomenal increase in the number of wireless subscribers connected via a wide range of wireless broadband technologies. In this talk the state of existing and future wireless broadband technologies in the Malaysia such as WiMAX, HSPA, LTE, WLAN/WiFi and their evolutions will be discussed. This talk will also introduce in layman terms some of the major technological breakthroughs in the antenna systems such as Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), Space Time Coding (STC) and Beamforming (BF) that contribute to multiple folds increase in wireless data rate and range in recent years. Cloud computing and the low power wide area network (LPWAN) network represent the key infrastructures for developing intelligent solutions based on the internet of things (IoT). However, the diversity of use cases and deployment scenarios of IoT in the different domains makes optimizing IoT-based cloud solutions a major challenge. The cloud solution’s cost increases with the increase in central processing unit (CPU) resources and energy consumption. The optimal use of edge material resources in industrial solutions will reduce the consumption of resources and thus optimize cloud infrastructure costs in terms of resources and energy consumption. The article presents the network and application architecture of an IoT monitoring solution based on cloud services. Then, we study the integration of IoT services based on application placement strategies on the fog cloud compared to the traditional centralized cloud strategy. Simulations evaluate the scenarios with the iFogSim simulator and the analyzed results compare the traditional strategy with the cloud-fog. The results show that cost and energy consumption in the cloud can be significantly reduced by processing the application at the end devices level with respect to the possible limit of CPU processing power for each IoT end device. Latency and network usage respect quality of service constraints in cloud-fog placement for this type of monitoring-oriented IoT application.

FSO: Efficient Connectivity Solution for Campus Area Network
This project proposes using a free space optics (FSO) system as an efficient connectivity solution for the campus area network of the University of Sindh. We would like to invite you to an exclusive webinar entitled 'Small Cell Networks: Lessons Learned', presented by Maravedis-Rethink and featuring our guest speaker Jim Parker, Senior Manager of the Antenna Solutions Group at AT&T, one of the world's most advanced deployers of small cells.
Mr Parker's team is responsible for in-building solutions including small cells, DAS and others, and is a vital element of AT&T's ambitious plan to roll out 40,000 small cells over two years. The first phase of that roll-out is currently taking place, and the webinar will feature some of the earliest insights into the progress of the program, and the lessons learned so far.
With operators round the world formulating their strategies for small cell deployments over the coming years, AT&T's experiences will be eagerly watched. The webinar will offer a unique opportunity to hear about the achievements and challenges so far, and to gain insights into AT&T's future plans in this important area of 3G and 4G roll-out.
Topics will include technology platforms for small cells; neutral hosting; the challenges of the indoor environment; and interworking with other technologies such as Wi-Fi, with an eye to the future HetNet.
These insights will be complemented by key findings from Maravedis-Rethink's MOSA (Mobile Operator Strategy Analysis) and RAN Service analysts. MOSA tracks the top 100 4G operators and their business strategies, and has a per-carrier analysis of small cell deployment plans, among other topics. Meanwhile, the RAN Service tracks worldwide roll-outs of all types of carrier infrastructure, with granular five-year forecasts in areas including metrocells and DAS.
In the webinar, Research Director Caroline Gabriel will share selected highlights from the latest MOSA Quarterly Report and RAN forecasts, including exclusive data in areas such as enterprise wireless and LTE-Advanced.

Cloud computing and the low power wide area network (LPWAN) network represent the key infrastructures for developing intelligent solutions based on the internet of things (IoT). However, the diversity of use cases and deployment scenarios of IoT in the different domains makes optimizing IoT-based cloud solutions a major challenge. The cloud solution’s cost increases with the increase in central processing unit (CPU) resources and energy consumption. The optimal use of edge material resources in industrial solutions will reduce the consumption of resources and thus optimize cloud infrastructure costs in terms of resources and energy consumption. The article presents the network and application architecture of an IoT monitoring solution based on cloud services. Then, we study the integration of IoT services based on application placement strategies on the fog cloud compared to the traditional centralized cloud strategy. Simulations evaluate the scenarios with the iFogSim simulator and the analyzed results compare the traditional strategy with the cloud-fog. The results show that cost and energy consumption in the cloud can be significantly reduced by processing the application at the end devices level with respect to the possible limit of CPU processing power for each IoT end device. Latency and network usage respect quality of service constraints in cloud-fog placement for this type of monitoring-oriented IoT application.

FSO: Efficient Connectivity Solution for Campus Area Network
This project proposes using a free space optics (FSO) system as an efficient connectivity solution for the campus area network of the University of Sindh. The document compares FSO to fiber optic networks and finds that FSO has lower installation costs and time while providing high bandwidth connectivity. Simulations show that FSO links can achieve data rates similar to fiber optics over distances up to 2km before signal degradation becomes an issue. Cost estimates indicate that an FSO system would cost approximately 70% less than a comparable fiber optic network for the University of Sindh campus. The project aims to increase awareness of FSO as a feasible alternative to fiber optics for shorter-distance, high-speed data communication in Pakistan.
