2. What is respiratory system?
System that is responsible for taking in oxygen that body cell
needs from the outside, and to throw away the waste products
and carbon dioxide produced by those cells.
Consists of:
Nose --- Pharynx --- Larynx --- Trachea --- Bronchus --- Bronchiole --- Alveolus
Lung (Pulmo)
3. STARTER ACTIVITY!
- What changes that you can observe?
- What makes that changes to happen?
- Discuss with your friends and state your
conclusion!
Your teacher will guide you to do something coOoOool… and after that, try to answer
these series of questions!
8. 1 NOSE
Air enters the passage through the nose.
Fine hairs in the nose trap dust particles in the
air.
The nose is moistened by mucus (a watery
liquid)
● To make the air moist as it passes inwards
● To traps bacteria that are carried on the air
currents
The air is warmed by the body temperature
9. 2 PHARYNX
Serves as a passageway for air and also food
(from digestive system)
Aids in phonation by changing its shape.
3 LARYNX
Specific passageway for air from the pharynx
(food DO NOT allowed here!)
Contains vocal cords, which produce sound.
10. 4 TRACHEA (WINDPIPE)
A smooth, muscular tube leading from the
larynx to the bronchus
It is made from rings of cartilage.
Each ring is in the shape of a “C”, act as
structure support.
The inner lining of trachea has 2 types of cells:
● Mucus-secreting cells
To trap the dust particles and bacteria in the form of
mucus
● Ciliated epithelial cells
Move the mucus to the pharynx where it enters the
back of the mouth and it is swallowed.
11. 5 BRONCHUS
The trachea divides into two
smaller tubes, known as bronchi
(singular : bronchus).
These tubes still lined up with
cilia and mucus on their inner
surface.
… And finally we made our way to lungs!
The bronchi divide up into
many smaller tubes, called
bronchioles.
This is the last tube before the
air goes to the end of breathing
journey: alveolus.
6 BRONCHIOLES
12. 7 ALVEOLUS
… And finally we made our way to lungs!
The lungs are two spongy organs that filled with an
interlacing network of tubes, alveoli sacs, and
blood vessels
Each lung is divided into lobes;
the right lung into 3 lobes and the left lung into 2.
The air cells where the gas exchange takes place.
An alveolus has adaptations to allow it to exchange
gases effectively.
● Large surface area
● Thin and elastic walls
● Surround by a network of blood capillaries
● Moist surface
13. ANOTHER STRUCTURAL SUPPORT
INTERCOSTAL MUSCLE
The internal and external intercostal muscles
make the ribs move.
DIAPHRAGM
It is a large sheet of muscle attached to the
edges of the tenth pair of ribs and the
backbone.
It separates the chest cavity (lungs & heart)
from the lower body cavity.
