eSport has long since become more than an unusual niche sport. Analysts predict that this high-level gaming will positively boom. The role being granted to computer games played on a professional level is confirmed by the fact that successful football clubs such as Schalke 04 and Paris Saint Germain currently have their own League of Legends teams (a multiplayer online game). The strategic consultancy LSP Digital compared revenue and viewer numbers for eSports with those for other sports leagues and events. The comparison shows that the digital competition has not quite yet reached the national sport level. But the figures are still worth presenting. In 2016, over 300 million viewers watched eSports events. The final of the 2016 League of Legends World Championship was streamed by 15 million viewers. That’s more viewers than during the DFB Cup final in 2016. The chart shows revenue and viewer numbers for eSport compared to other sports leagues and events.
